Description:
Western Canada Marine Response Corporation (WCMRC) is a Transport Canada certified Response Organization, whose mandate is to ensure there is a state of preparedness in place and to mitigate the impact when an oil spill occurs. This includes the protection of wildlife, economic and environmental sensitivities, and the safety of both the responders and the public.
WCMRC is recruiting Full-Time Base Operations Supervisors at two locations, Nanaimo and Port Alberni, B.C.
Our Operations team is comprised of professionals with diverse skills and experience. Their ability to effectively manage and direct spill response procedures within the first few hours after response activation significantly reduces the negative impact oil can have on the surrounding environment.
The Base Operations Supervisor will:
- Organize, plan, schedule and supervise day-to-day operations to support spill response activities as required.
- Maintain competency on all equipment and vessels within Zone of Operations.
- Support the development of the crew’s marine certification to ensure ongoing success of the organization.
- Plan and coordinate training and response readiness exercises, including training of contractors and new operations personnel on the proper use of equipment and vessels.
- Lead and supervise projects to enhance response capabilities and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Support Base/Area Manager in the development and execution of the training and operational area exercise budgets, including variance reporting.
- Ensure all operational activities comply with safety and environmental regulations and ensure compliance with MSS procedures and documentation; tailgate meetings, TSRAs, and Health and Safety plans.
- Ensure crew’s required safety training is completed, including vessel drills, and report all incidents to Base/Area Manager and DPA.
- Review Voyage Plans to ensure compliance with safe navigation practices, company procedures, local regulations and applicable Canadian marine regulations.
- Support monthly work orders, annual equipment refits, vessel dry docking, and regulatory inspections, i.e., Commercial Vehicle Inspections, Transport Canada Vessel Inspections.
- Responsible for all base assets to ensure response readiness, including routine inspections.
- Provide effective leadership to create a highly engaged team. Supports Base Manager in recruitment and selection of base level staff.
- Supervise staff including assignment of work, probationary and annual performance reviews, leave approvals and initiation of disciplinary processes.
- Fulfill the role of Duty Manager when assigned.
To be successful in this role you will possess a minimum Master 60GT or Marine Engineering certificate, a 5 to 7 years of previous marine experience, power equipment maintenance, and working knowledge of local coastlines, along with the completion of a post-secondary degree or diploma, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Master 150GT certificate and previous supervisory experience is an asset. In addition, you are a collaborative team player with great communication and planning skills, and the ability to work well under pressure and meet multiple deadlines. Other marine certificates, education or experience would be an asset.
