Description:
Before and/or After School Lead position available. Do you have at least 1 year experience leading children grades Gr2 to 5 (eg. summer camps or recreational activities)? Are you completely comfortable guiding a group of 12 - 15 energetic children and keeping them directed while having fun?
We are looking for a leader who can be a mentor to the children and keep them entertained while learning. If you have a high energy level and understand the fine line between being a friend and being the mentor who will be remembered in years to come, then this job could be the rewarding part time position for you!
Our program includes Outdoor Science (or science outdoors), Music, Entrepreneurship, Multiculturalism and Community Programs!!! You will lead the kids in awesome after school activities, and can bring your passions to share with our elementary school age children.
Perfect for someone completing their studies at a post secondary institution or just wanting part time hours to leave time for another job or other passions. Block 8 Academy provides before and after school programming in the heart of Port Moody. This position is perfect for individuals wanting a part time position serving the community by providing child care. Our program keeps the kids busy while seeking to be a standout in social emotional development. We provide a mix of structured lessons and unstructured free time.
Our multi-age, multi-talented team of staff include specialists in elementary education, artists, athletes, support workers and more.
The position requires positive, energetic, experienced people. The leaders are responsible for engaging with and supervising children (ages 5-12) in a busy program setting. This role involves: planning and implementing daily activities, managing behaviour, providing learning opportunities and support for participants, attending to the developmental (social, emotional, physical, and cognitive) needs of participants and their families, supporting volunteers, and providing a safe and welcoming atmosphere for participants to engage in activities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- At least 19 years of age.
- A high level of functional spoken and written English skills - sufficient to ensure successful communication with staff, children and parents
- 1-5 years of experience providing care and guidance to school-aged children in a daycare or recreational setting.
- At least 20 hours in child development, guidance, health and safety or nutrition.
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR C (or equivalent) certification.
- Current clear criminal record search.
- Class 5 Driver’s License, clean driver’s abstract and sufficient driving experience to be comfortable driving children a short drive to school (Optional)

Responsibilities:
- Leading a group of 12 - 15 children in a variety of activities: sports, games, crafts, etc. If you specialize in one type of activity (e.g. Music), we will work with you for you to be able to share that expertise with the children. If you are more of a generalist, you can pick from the activities that are already developed for that curriculum area.
- Supervising children to ensure safety in the program.
- Performing first aid treatment.
- Planning daily activities based on curriculum outlines.
- Set-up and take down of shared spaces.
- Liaising with parents/caregivers on a regular basis.
- Participating in regular staff meetings and training sessions.
- Developing positive relationships with participants and acting as a role model and mentor.
- Assisting children as they eat their snacks.
- Helping children to change clothing when necessary.
- Helping to keep the children and environment clean.
- Supervising participants on trips away from the centre.
- Assisting with sterilization and light cleaning of the centre
- (optional) Driving children to and from school and assisting then as they get into/out of the van.
- Other duties as required.
