Description

Nokia Bell Labs is the world-renowned research arm of Nokia, having invented many of the foundational technologies that underpin information and communications networks and all digital devices and systems. This research has produced ten Nobel Prizes, five Turing Awards and numerous other awards.
The Data Driven Software Systems Research team builds reliable, trustworthy and intuitive software systems. Research areas in the team include distributed computing, decentralized computing, AI/ML software systems, and privacy-preserving & trust insertion technologies. We create novel technologies and scalable software systems with verification at their core, enabling secure collaboration and federation while ensuring trust, privacy, provenance, verification and efficiency.
Our international team is based in Antwerp (Belgium) and Stuttgart (Germany).
Are you passionate about improving how software and software systems get built? Do you have a strong research background in software systems, with a proven publication track record? Do you love to write code, build systems, and validate your ideas through tangible prototypes? Then join us in building the next generation of software systems at Nokia Bell Labs, the birthplace of software pearls like UNIX and C.

As a research scientist on software systems in our team you will:

  • Identify and explore new research challenges on emerging software systems topics
  • Stay current with the latest systems research trends, challenge the status quo, and push boundaries of the state-of-the-art
  • Build proof-of-concept systems, create (re-)usable software assets and evangelize your work to the research community
  • Publish research at leading academic and industrial forums, create new intellectual property, and present results to internal and external stakeholders
  • Collaborate with Bell Labs researchers across the globe, and external academic and industrial partners, on challenging research projects
  • Work with Nokia business units and incubators to incubate research into early-stage products or spinouts, transfer knowledge, and act as expert counsel in your field of expertise
  • Keep an active and visible role in the research community through conference committees and reviewing panels
  • We are looking for a motivated research scientist with the following qualification: You have a PhD degree in computer science or a related field
  • You have a strong research background in software systems (e.g., distributed systems, cloud systems, ML systems and privacy-enhancing technologies)
  • A proven track record of publications in top research venues is a definite plus
  • You have demonstrable programming skills, and you like to build working prototypes
  • Pointers to prototypes you have built or open-source libraries you have contributed to are much appreciated
  • You have strong communication skills and are able to explain your research to a broad audience in academia and industry
  • You have a personal drive, are committed to team objectives and have a positive “can-do” attitude
  • You can work autonomously with little day-to-day guidance
  • You feel comfortable working in an international environment where English is the main language
