Job Summary
The Benefits Specialist is responsible for organizing and managing the administration of all ancillary and non- ancillary employee benefits programs.
Reports to Manager, Total Rewards
Job Specific Responsibilities
Daily assignments may include but are not limited to:
- Provide excellent customer service to employees both verbally and in writing, regarding plan provisions, enrollments, qualifying event changes and other general inquiries.
- Serve as primary contact to employees, plan vendors, and third-party administrators regarding benefit plan questions, answers, and modifications
- Oversee day-to-day operations of employee benefit plans, including but not limited to, health, dental, vision, FSA- Health and Dependent Care, Disability, Group and Supplemental Life Insurance, all retirement accounts, and employee elected supplemental benefits
- Administer Leave of Absence programs (FMLA, Medical, Personal, etc..)
- Coordinate daily benefits processing which includes but not limited to review and processing New Hire benefit enrollments, managing qualifying event changes, termination changes, beneficiary updates, disability, accident and death claims, rollovers, QDROs, QMCSOs, distributions, loans, hardships, and compliance testing
- Administer leave of absence requests and accommodations.
- Advise/ Make recommendations to department leaders regarding interaction of leave laws with paid or unpaid time off, worker’s compensation, modified work schedules, and short term and long- term benefits
- Coordinate with external administrators to assist employees with filing for or claims related to short term or long-term disability
- Assist with preparing, marketing, and coordinating Open Enrollment activities
- Works closely with Manager, Total Rewards and Director, Human Resource to evaluate current and new market plan offerings to ensure employee/employer cost effectiveness
- Work closely with HRIS to ensure compliance requirements are met, resolve benefit errors related to job changes or QLE, testing, etc..
- Work closely with payroll to resolve employee benefit issues that may arise
- Additional duties assigned under the auspices of Total Rewards discipline
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree + 2 years of experience with high volume Benefits administration
OR
- High School Diploma or GED + 4 years of human resource experience with familiarity of employee benefits implementation and maintenance
- Knowledge of leave requirements, particularly those related to Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), the American with Disabilities Act (ADA), and state and local leave laws

- Good planning, organizational and ability to follow-through until a process is complete.
Interaction with Other Departments and Other Relationships
The person in this role will have interactions with all departments and employees within UMC
Physical Capabilities
Occasionally exerts a small amount of force to lift, carry, push, pull, and move objects. Should be able to lift 10 lbs. Work involves sitting for prolonged periods of time.
