JOB DESCRIPTION Whitefish Mountain Resort / Winter Sports, Inc. Title: Bike Trail Crew Department: Events and Recreation Status: Full Time (FTS) FLSA: Non-Exempt, Hourly Updated: May 2026 Job Summary  Perform trail maintenance, construction, and inspection using WMR and USFS-approved trail building techniques. Support safe and sustainable trail conditions consistent with WMR standards and trail classifications. Assist with bike races, clinics, and mountain events. Work closely with Patrol during emergency response situations including medical incidents, lift evacuations, wildfire response, and dispatch support. The majority of work is conducted outdoors in an active on-mountain environment. Assist with production and support of bike races, clinics, and mountain events. Additional administrative work may be conducted in the Events and Recreation office located in the Mountain Operations building. Job Relationships  Reports to: Trail Crew Supervisor  Employees Supervised: None Job Specifications * High school diploma or GED equivalent; college education or trade education preferred. * Knowledge of Whitefish Mountain Resort operations and/or resort operations preferred. * Must be able to safely ride all trails at WMR; advanced biking skills preferred. * Previous experience in trail building, mountain biking, or outdoor labor experience preferred. * Trail maintenance requires proficiency with landscaping and mountain bike tools, knowledge of proper use, and understanding of mountain bike trail building techniques. * Knowledge of trail building/erosion prevention techniques preferred. * Ability to operate a mountain bike consistent with WMR Mountain Bike training and WMR Mountain Bike policy. * Ability to assist with dispatch operations at any time. * Knowledge of basic lift operation, evacuation procedures, and ability to identify potential problems. * Knowledge of all WMR sweeps, morning duties, trail closures, and sweeps. * Must have very strong guest service skills. * Per WSI Vehicle Insurance standards: must be at least 21 years of age to transport guests and possess a valid driver’s license and the ability to be added to WSI’s vehicle insurance policy. * Able to operate mountain vehicles and use only mountain vehicle-approved routes. * Subject to WSI’s Alcohol and Controlled Substance Abuse Policy based on the nature of the position and related duties. Specific Duties Trail Maintenance * Build and maintain bike trails using hand tools and small mechanized equipment including, but not limited to, chainsaws, packers, water pumps, and vehicles in off-road situations. Ensure their safe operation by all trail staff. * Strong understanding of the WMR sign standard, ensuring signs are placed properly, maintained, and visible. Check and replace trail signs and trail markings. * Safely transport gear to and from various work sites. * Trail tool proficiency with knowledge of proper use and understanding of mountain bike trail building techniques. * Communicate with Bike Park Management and Trail Crew Supervisor to identify areas of need or improvement. * Be or become familiar with all mountain trails, winter trail names, access points, and areas. * Check and replace trail signs and identify trail marking needs. * Help with administrative duties related to trail maintenance, design, and construction of bike trails. Accidents, Rescue, and Evacuation * Ability to assist with dispatch operations at any time. * Assist in a support and transport role for accidents/medical emergencies on biking and hiking trails, activities, or within mountain facilities. * Be familiar with protocol for transportation support during an accident response by Bike Patrol. * Possess thorough knowledge of all patient extrication and egress points on the mountain. Public Relations * Expected to be neat, clean, and wear approved/provided uniforms. * Expected to be courteous and helpful to mountain guests and present a professional attitude and manner. * Provide information to guests at patrol stations and headquarters, as well as on the mountain. Races and Events * Perform event setup and support as needed for bike races, on-mountain events, and weddings. Work Environment * In the event of an emergency rescue, lifting up to 100 pounds may be required, possibly on rugged and uneven terrain. * Twisting at the torso and bending at the knees on uneven terrain. * Repetitive lifting of 25 to 50 pounds. * Must be able to mountain hike with heavy loads of up to 50 pounds. * Continuously throughout the shift required to twist, stoop/bend, squat, kneel, grasp with both hands, and ride bicycles. * Repetitively twist, stoop/bend, squat, kneel, and grasp with both hands. * Work is moderate to strenuous and frequent overall in all types of weather and conditions. * Occasionally climb lift towers, stairs, and work above the ground (heights). * Ability to work under varying weather conditions, often extreme in nature. * Job requires working weekends, holidays, and overtime during peak demand times. * Required to wear a helmet during all on-bike activities, when operating chainsaws, or any other time a head injury or overhead hazard is present. Safety & Wellness  All team members must be on alert for any unsafe conditions and work behaviors. This will involve, but not be limited to, periodic inspections of work and public areas.
