Job Summary:
This is a 12-month contract position
The bilingual editor prepares CSA Standards and related documents for publication. Accountable for the integrity of the editing process and the quality and timely delivery of publications. They maintain CSA editorial policies and operating procedures, provide editorial and publishing guidance to CSA staff, committee members, and external editorial, production, and translation resources, and liaises with internal and external customers and suppliers. They also participate in the delivery of the divisional publishing plan in co-operation with standards development staff, committee members, and other Publishing team members, keeping the Team Leader, Editorial, informed of advances or delays.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Copy-edits for spelling, grammar, punctuation, syntax, consistency, correct representation of mathematical expressions, cross-references, SI usage, and such mechanics as capitalization and abbreviation.
  • Carries out structural editing, and stylistic editing for proper organization of content readability, clarity of expression, legal liability, copyright protection, and conformity to CSA’s directives, accreditation requirements, and operating procedures regarding the drafting of Standards; queries document content as necessary; reviews editorial changes and queries with standards development staff and/or committee members and ensures that all issues of substance are addressed before publication.
  • Editing is primarily done on screen; some hard-copy editing may be required.
  • Proofreads drafts, as required, to verify the integrity of document conversion and formatting, including the representation of mathematical type, scientific symbols, non-English characters, spacing, tables, and graphics.
  • Might be required to mark up successive drafts for addition and deletion of text, correction of misspellings, transpositions, and typographical errors, incorporation of new material, sizing of graphics, and design of tables.
  • In partnership with Team Leader, Editorial, development staff and committee members, works to maintain or improve editorial and production schedules for each project in conformity with the divisional publication plan, including priorities and rushes; tracksprojects and monitors schedules, providing up-to-date status information to Development staff and advising the Team Leader, Editorial, of advances or delays.
  • Provides guidance to Publishing System Specialists (PSSs), administrative staff, and external suppliers. Verifies work of PSSs. Coordinates and directs the work of external suppliers, setting priorities, verifying quality of work, and providing training and coaching. Coordinates with Graphics Coordinator to ensure timely preparation of graphics. Responsible for editing and quality control related to graphics.
  • Adheres to divisional and departmental procedures and processes governing workflow and quality (Publishing and divisional checklists). Acts as an editorial consultant to Standards Development staff and committee members on the implementation of CSA’s directives, guidelines, and operating procedures and Provides guidance on the drafting of content. Attends committee meetings as needed. Provides writing guidance as needed. Periodically presents the editorial guidelines to PMs and committee members. Acts as editorial resource for PMs and members during drafting of standards.
  • Maintains CSA’s directives, guidelines, and operating procedures by ensuring that current practices are accurately recorded and taken into account during any revisions. Plays key strategic role in quality assurance of core products, ensuring that appropriate approvals and sign-offs are in place. Works with Policies and Procedures to ensure that CSA’s accreditation requirements are met and that National Standards of Canada are processed in accordance with Standards Council of Canada requirements.
  • Verifies accuracy of translated content.
  • Reviews French Standards and related publications, verifying formatted French document against draft translation and English publication; proofing for French format, accents, agreement, etc. Consulting and problem-solving with translators, committee reviewers, and Development staff. Provides proofreading, verification, and Quality Control on production work. Performs some minor French translations. Participates in French publication process: e.g., facilitating the external French review process; assessing external French editorial work, resolving outstanding queries from external editors, and doing Quality Control)
  • Responsible for pre-publication quality checks of source files and PDFs.
  • Contributes to departmental, divisional, and corporate initiatives as required. Examples: Customer loyalty, continuous quality improvement, and process improvement (LEAN Initiatives).

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • University Degree (BA in Translation, English, French, Journalism, Communications or other relevant discipline as appropriate), or equivalent
  • 3 years of experience
  • Excellent command of French and English;
  • Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, Adobe Acrobat Professional
  • Experience in on-screen editing § Proficiency in XML-based publishing tool (e.g. Arborext) an asset
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word
  • Familiarity with technical writing in English, French, or both is an asset
