Description

Bioinformatician position at Copenhagen Hospital Biobank Unit, Rigshospitalet
We have an available bioinformatician position in a strong and inspiring research environment at our Biobank Unit at Rigshospitalet. The bioinformatician will have the opportunity to run their own research projects (50%), including working with the largest genetic cohorts in Denmark, and contribute to our current data management and infrastructural projects (50%).
Our research
Our research is focused on two large genetic cohort studies:
Copenhagen Hospital Biobank (CHB, https://www.regionh.dk/forskning-og-innovation/Region-Hovedstadens-biobank/Sider/default.aspx) is an ongoing regional biobank comprising 450,000 Danish patients, of which more than 350,000 of these have been genotyped (GSA Illumina).
The Danish Blood Donor Study (DBDS, www.dbds.dk) is an ongoing national epidemiological cohort study. DBDS includes more than 150,000 Danish blood donors with questionnaire data, blood samples and chip genotyping (GSA Illumina) data available.
This bioinformatician position is aimed at strengthening our research output and group. The position is linked to collaborative projects with researchers at The University of Copenhagen (the Faculty of Health and Medical Science) and Copenhagen University Hospital, Rigshospitalet, as well as several international collaborators. Analysis of data (genetics, biomarkers, registers, and questionnaires) will be conducted at the national supercomputer, Computerome.
Your position
As a bioinformatician at Copenhagen Hospital Biobank Unit, you will be expected to contribute to both research projects (50%) and infrastructural/data management projects (50%). You will run your own genetic and -omics research projects as part of major collaborations within the research fields of inflammation and cardiovascular disease, reproductive health, cancer, degenerative, inflammatory, or brain diseases. You will be working in close collaboration with senior and younger researchers, and we expect you to contribute to the supervision of master’s and PhD students. We additionally expect you to contribute to infrastructural/data management projects, which may include preprocessing and preparing datasets (incl. creating data visualizations) for researchers and leaders and contributing to the development of new data QC and/or analysis pipelines.
Qualifications

Candidates for the bioinformatician position must hold a PhD degree in bioinformatics/genetic epidemiology (or equivalent). The successful candidate will have strong qualifications or experience within the majority of the following areas:

  • Previous hands-on experience with large genomics data handling and analysis
  • Experience in health informatics or precision medicine-related research projects
  • Experience in the supervision of PhD students and/or master’s students
  • Strong expertise in programming (R/python)
  • Solid experience with Linux/UNIX operating system, command lines and shell scripting
  • Experience in quality control and analysis of large-scale datasets
  • Basic understanding of human biology and disease development
  • Proficient organizational skills and ability to work individually as well as in teams
  • Excellent communication skills, and fluency in written and spoken English
  • Fluency in Danish is an advantage

Project management of interdisciplinary research projects
The Copenhagen Hospital Biobank Unit at Rigshospitalet is highly multidisciplinary and collaborates with several other research groups nationally and internationally. Strong networking and team player skills are therefore preferred. As the candidate may run several projects in parallel, strong organizational skills and the ability to keep an overview are important.

The research and unit are led by Sisse Ostrowski (professor, head of research) and Erik Sørensen (head of operations), respectively, and comprises a wide range of expertise and resources including modern laboratories, supercomputer resources, biobanking, genetics, bioinformatics, and epidemiology.
You will be part of a committed, ambitious, and informal team, where skill and the creation of new scientific knowledge is highly valued. We offer a workplace with focus on research, teaching, and innovation.
