Description

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Leidos Public Health Division has a 3-month paid fellowship program for a graduate level scientist specialized in Bioinformatics science and pipeline development. The graduate fellow will work with Leidos on bioinformatics projects of public health importance. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in Transcriptomics, NGS data analysis, including QC, assembly, annotation, alignment, variant detection, and preferably phylogenetic analysis of microbial genomes and metagenomes. Extensive hands-on experience with bioinformatics pipeline development using Nextflow is expected. This fellowship may be extended beyond 3 months and is open to telecommuting, location preferred Atlanta, GA.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A master’s degree in bioinformatics, genomics, molecular biology, genetics or related field 2+ years of hands-on bioinformatics experience through academic or research work.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Experience in developing pipelines using Nextflow, Snakemake, and/or Workflow Description Language (WDL).
  • Experience with processing of high-throughput data and possessing strong data management and analysis skills.
  • Experience working in Linux environments and broad experience with open source bioinformatics tools
  • Proficient coding/scripting in Python, R, Perl
  • Experience working in a high-performance computing environment
  • Strong communication skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A PhD degree in bioinformatics, genomics, molecular biology, genetics or related field
  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Hands on bioinformatics development experience in public health
  • Experience in designing and conducting training workshops to the bioinformatics community on latest bioinformatics methods and concepts
  • Previous internship or fellowship experience at the CDC or other public health agencies
Responsibilities
  • Develop, test, and deploy bioinformatics data pipelines and workflows using Nextflow.
  • Develop and execute bioinformatics algorithms and workflows in HPC (high-performance computing) environments.
  • Write customs scripts and software to perform bioinformatics analysis using Python, Perl and/or R.
  • Perform bioinformatics analysis using open-source bioinformatics tools as well as licensed proprietary software such as CLC Genomics Workbench and Geneious. Support modeling and simulation of evolutionary and population biological process using Bayesian inference and/or genetic algorithms.
  • Use statistical analysis tools, interpret and communicate results.
  • Develop tools for visualizing complex biological datasets and able to interpret and communicate results as well as uncertainty to a diverse group of customers.
  • Develop and maintain highly curated genomic sequence databases, signature databases for virulence and AMR markers, strain type and pathogen type markers.
  • Work together with the DevOps team in adopting best software engineering practices for tool and workflow development.
  • Assist with developing standard operating procedures for bioinformatics analyses.
  • Supports public health researchers in creating and submitting publication and poster presentations.
