Description Job Purpose: To instruct, guide and inspire students by developing engaging curriculum within a positive learning environment. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities: Teach four sections of classes in an interactive classroom environment Coach an athletic team or supervise an afternoon program for the equivalent of two out of three seasons Serve as a faculty advisor Live in a dormitory and/or participate in the residential life program, which includes a rotation of weeknight and weekend responsibilities Participate in the student life program QUEST and the academic program Project:Pomfret Attend faculty, school, departmental meetings, chapel services, and other required school functions and be available for weekly office hours Manage relationships with parents that support the social and emotional well-being, intellectual development, and independent personal responsibility of students Know, understand, and commit to the Mission and Vision of Pomfret School Build positive and appropriate relationships with students and colleagues Design and facilitate rigorous and empowering learning that is student-centered, relevant, and meaningful Value the diverse thoughts, perspectives, learning abilities, and life experiences of students and colleagues Collaborate with colleagues to create programs (academic, extracurricular, dormitory, QUEST, Project:Pomfret, etc.) that enhance the growth and learning of students while fulfilling the goals of Pomfret’s Mission and Vision Cultivate the discipline, habits, and mindsets of a reflective practitioner by seeking feedback, documenting his/her learning, and establishing related goals and action plans that target student outcomes Pursue continuous professional growth and development Maintain current knowledge of his or her discipline, to review and revise curriculum, and to grow their repertoire of teaching and learning strategies Must adhere to all School policies as outlined in the Employee Handbook Continually meet or exceed Pomfret School’s Standards of Behavior, Character, and Engagement Perform other duties as assigned Requirements Qualifications: Three years of teaching experience in a residential or day school setting Bachelors degree in Biology or related field required. Master’s degree preferred Possess strong content knowledge of biology Possess experience working with aquaponics systems and will be excited to both run and integrate Pomfret School’s greenhouse system into electives and a high-level biology curriculum A team player dedicated to supporting the growth of students Must hold a valid US driver’s license Passionate about, comfortable with, and find enjoyment in working with adolescents Ability to relate well to all constituents in a school community Organized, diligent, and possess a strong, proactive work ethic Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills Communicates clearly, in a timely manner, and with confidentially with students, parents, and colleagues Empathetic leader and learner with demonstrated success in providing student-centered, solution-focused mentoring to high school-aged students Work Conditions: Sitting, standing, walking and working on a computer Coaching or afternoon activity may require being outdoors Driving a mid bus for school activities may be required
Responsibilities
The Biology Teacher is responsible for instructing and guiding students in an interactive classroom environment while also participating in extracurricular activities and residential life.
