Description:

JOB SUMMARY

The Molecular Diagnostics department provides a range of blood grouping tests using molecular techniques for NHS and international customers. Tests are focused on prediction of fetal blood group using free fetal DNA in maternal plasma for pregnant women with potential blood group incompatibility with their fetus, and patient blood group using DNA, where serological tests cannot be performed. We also provide a national fetal RHD screening service to support targeted antenatal RhIg prophylaxis for D negative pregnant women.
The department requires a Biomedical Scientist (Band 5) or Biomedical Scientist Specialist (Band 6) with specialist knowledge and experience of working in a diagnostic laboratory. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team. You must have a passion for molecular genotyping and be highly motivated about achieving a high level of scientific performance.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE

  • Experience in specialised laboratory techniques using a wide range of complex equipment.
  • Experience of working with Information Technology.
  • Broad science knowledge with a specialist knowledge in transfusion / transplantation science gained through previous experience working as a Biomedical Scientist. (Band 6 only)
  • Experience in prioritising and issuing work to other staff and monitoring progress to ensure deadlines are met. (Band 6 only)
  • Experience of writing reports, preparing and delivering presentations and training and mentoring staff. (Band 6 only)
  • Understanding of UK Accreditation Service (UKAS), Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), UK Blood Transfusion Service (UKBTS) and British Committee for Standards in Haematology (BCSH) guidelines. (Band 6 only)

QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING

  • Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered Biomedical Scientist.
  • Evidence of continuous learning and professional development.
  • Willingness to undertake further training and development.
  • Science graduate with relevant post graduate training eg British Blood Transfusion Society specialist certificate, British Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Diploma or equivalent. (Band 6 only)

Responsibilities:

MAIN DUTIES OF THE JOB

  • You will be required to perform, analyse, record and interpret a wide range of laboratory investigations and technical procedures relating to the issue of patient test results for organ transplant and blood transfusion and the issue of blood and tissue products, with the support of the team.
  • You will be responsible for the support and training of new and less experienced staff.
  • You will be required to handle blood and tissue samples and operate a range of laboratory analysers and equipment.

Molecular Diagnostics are looking to recruit two staff members to work one of the two below work patterns:

  • Monday to Friday - 09:00-17:00 with occasional Saturday cover
  • Tuesday to Saturday - 09:00-17:00 Tuesday to Friday, and 08:00-16:00 on Saturday, with occasional Monday cover.

The role may require you to work variable hours and days with reasonable notice. The laboratory working hours are 07:00 to 18:00, Monday to Saturday.
