We are looking for the next Lady or Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod.
Black Rod is His Majesty’s Representative within the House of Lords and the Secretary to the Lord Great Chamberlain and Serjeant at Arms. Black Rod’s Department is a significant part of the House of Lords ‘front of house’ for members and the public. The Department plays a significant role in the day-to-day running of the House’s sittings, as well as being responsible for the organisation and delivery of all state occasions and ceremonial events.
As Black Rod, you will be responsible for the delivery of major events, including the State Opening of Parliament and state visits to Westminster. You will lead on business resilience and continuity arrangements for the House of Lords, acting as Lords chair of the bicameral Business Resilience Board and Duty Silver within the Incident Management Framework and working closely with colleagues across parliament.
The postholder has responsibility for facilitating and controlling access to the Chamber and the precincts of the House and maintaining order within them. Black Rod leads Black Rod’s Department as Head of Office and budget holder, supported by the Yeoman Usher (Black Rod’s Deputy), a small team of support staff, and the House of Lords Doorkeepers.
Black Rod is a senior member of the House of Lords Administration, developing strategies and plans to meet the changing needs of the House and its Members, managing their office business plan, risk register and budget, and making an active contribution to the corporate functioning of the House Administration.
