JOB SUMMARY:

The Blood Bank Supervisor performs routine and specialized laboratory tests to support the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases, with a strong focus on blood bank and transfusion services. This person is responsible for the prompt, efficient, and accurate performance of all work within the Blood Bank Department. Assures safe and applicable transfusion of blood products by maintaining the standards set forth by the American Association of Blood Banks, by coordinating products available with patient needs, and by supervising Blood Bank Technologists and Technicians.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a clinical laboratory, with at least 2 years of blood bank/transfusion services experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of immunohematology principles, blood compatibility testing, and transfusion reaction investigations. • Proficiency in blood bank information systems (BBIS) and laboratory information systems (LIS).
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills, particularly in complex transfusion cases.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities to coordinate with physicians, nurses, and laboratory staff.
  • Ability to thrive in a high-paced, detail-oriented environment, especially in emergency transfusion situations.

Education:

  • Associate’s degree in medical laboratory technology or related field.
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) by ASCP, AMT, or equivalent preferred

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for policies and procedures in cooperation with the Administrative Laboratory Director and LIS coordinator to ensure prompt, efficient, and accurate testing results.
  • Collects, reviews, and submits for approval all the quality control, monitoring of QC, validations, correlations, monthly preventative maintenance departmental forms and patient testing results to the Administrative Laboratory Director Perform routine and complex laboratory tests, with a primary focus on blood bank/transfusion services, including type and screen, crossmatching, and compatibility testing.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot blood bank analyzers and other laboratory instruments.
  • Adhere to blood bank-specific regulatory requirements (COLA, AABB, FDA, Joint Commission) to ensure patient safety and compliance.
  • Conduct quality control and proficiency testing to maintain the integrity of blood bank procedures.
  • Monitor blood product inventory, perform necessary labeling, and ensure timely distribution of blood components.
  • Collaborate with physicians and clinical teams to provide expert guidance on transfusion reactions and complex antibody cases.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of test results and transfusion-related documentation in compliance with HIPAA and regulatory guidelines
  • Assist in training new staff and students in blood bank procedures and best practices.
  • Follow all biosafety and infection control protocols to ensure a safe working environment.
