Description
The Board of Tax Appeals Senior Hearing Officer plays an important part at the Board. In this role, you will be responsible for: Presiding as administrative law judge over quasi-judicial proceedings as directed by the Board of Tax Appeals concerning difficult/complex cases under Ohio Tax Laws. Assuming responsibility for case management of each assigned case to include prehearing procedures, conferences, issuance of prehearing orders concerning discovery or other preliminary matters. Conducting administrative hearings, qualifying lay and expert witnesses, making evidentiary rulings, admitting exhibits into evidence and completing full transcript of proceedings and receiving assignments from board. Overseeing and assisting lower-level attorneys in case management, trial techniques, and legal writing. Directing activities and reviewing orders and appellate transcripts prepared by paralegals. Preparing appropriate decision and order of judicial quality disposing of difficult/complex appeals and forwarding to board or chief attorney for review. Advising board and recommending policy decisions based on the outcome of cases. Providing specific advice to the board regarding legal issues and advising other state and local officials on tax matters. Participating in legal or other public seminars and giving speeches to the public on behalf of the board. This position is unclassified pursuant to ORC 124.11(A)(9). Admission to Ohio Bar pursuant to Section 4705.01 of Ohio Revised Code and current registration and good standing with Supreme Court. 5 years’ experience as attorney with Board of Tax Appeals or equivalent in practice of law. Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above. Job Skills: Attorney/Legal
