An independent firm of Chartered Accountants with a reputation for providing expert advice to owner-managed businesses and entrepreneurs, is looking for a motivated and experienced Payroll & Bookkeeping Specialist to join their Hoddesdon office. The firm prides itself on building strong, long-term client relationships and delivering accurate, timely and professional services.

PERSONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Previous experience in a professional accountancy practice (essential).
  • Strong technical knowledge of payroll, VAT and CIS compliance.
  • Proficiency with both cloud and desktop accounting software.
  • Excellent communication skills for client and HMRC liaison.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple deadlines and maintain accuracy under pressure.

Responsibilities
  • Carry out payroll operations for multiple clients, including calculating gross pay, statutory deductions and processing payslips.
  • Administer holiday pay, sick pay and parental leave pay in line with statutory requirements.
  • Submit PAYE/NIC data to HMRC and manage workplace pension contributions.
  • Verify sub-contractors for CIS, prepare and submit monthly returns, and arrange payment of CIS liabilities.
  • Perform bookkeeping for a portfolio of clients, ensuring accurate and timely record-keeping.
  • Prepare and submit VAT returns.
  • Liaise directly with clients to resolve queries and manage records.
  • Work across Sage Cloud, Sage 50, FreeAgent, QuickBooks and Xero accounting platforms.
  • Assist in preparing accounts for sole traders, partnerships and limited companies for review purposes, ideally with experience in TaxCalc. (Advantageous)
