Description:

Ensure further screening surveillance and/or treatment is implemented within agreed pathways, referring to other specialist nurses and services as appropriate, and that accurate and contemporaneous records are made of same. Present patients whom have cancers or malignant polyps detected and confirmed as a result of the screening examination at their local Colorectal MDT, referring them over for continuing specialist care. Ensure the participant; screening centre and BCSP hub are informed of their referral to the Colorectal Team and their new point of contact. Develop and maintain the collaborative working with the Colorectal Cancer MDT.
Has (through professional and clinical education and training programmes) an in-depth knowledge and experience of the epidemiology, aetiology, symptomology, investigation and treatment of colorectal disease and disorders. Has knowledge and experience of counselling and supporting patients, including breaking bad news (e.g. when cancer diagnosis made at Colonoscopy). Responsible for maintaining professional competence and standards to deliver care and services within the sphere of practice and clinical competence.
Responsible for identifying gaps in knowledge, skills and training and in collaboration with their line manager, peers, professional nursing advice/support and screening clinical director, develop a learning strategy to fill these gaps Responsible for an informed process for the purpose of consent to treatment and investigation (e.g. taking consent for Endoscopic procedures, giving information as part of preparation for further treatments or surveillance). Utilise expertise and skills to provide a comprehensive assessment of the physical, psychological and emotional well-being of the participant intending to take part in the screening examination. (Ability to take a full nursing and medical history, identifying factors which would prevent/contraindicate screening colonoscopy).
To manage verbal complaints and refer on when unable to resolve. Assist the Programme Manager and Team with the operational and strategic development of the BCSP Screening Centre, providing contribution of new ideas to improve patient care/experience Contribute to the development and implementation of guidelines, policies and procedures to inform and support the operational activities, screening centre team and BCSP Hub. Participate in ongoing data collection and transmission of data as part of the BCSP using agreed and secure IT technologies (BCSP Database etc). Attend and participate in meetings (within and external to the Trust) as required, including providing feedback and disseminating information as appropriate.
Participate in Quality Assurance Measures towards the provision of a high quality screening service and be involved (via clinical governance frameworks) with strategies to develop quality assurance standards and management. Assist with audit and research to provide an evidence-based practical base and assist with the dissemination of audit/research findings making recommendations for practice and future questions. Initiate, complete and maintain accurate and timely records of care provided. Take an active role in risk assessment, supporting implementation of strategies to minimise risk.
