JOB OVERVIEW

Hearth & Hug Bakery is expanding, and we want you to join our team! We are looking for a knowledgeable and hard-working individual to fill the role of artisan bread baker at our new Bakery/cafe space in Somerville. The bread baker will be responsible for mixing, proofing, shaping, and baking a variety of breads for sale, and for breakfast/lunch dishes. This is an AM shift that starts early to ensure that breads are ready for opening. Experience with sourdough, baguettes, ciabatta, and other artisan breads is required. The position also involves prepping your station to ensure the efficiency and flow of the next day’s service. Bakers will work closely with other back of house staff as well as the FOH to make creative, warm, homey products that make customers feel like they just sat down to eat at Grandma’s house. There is one spot available for the position, with the job hours set at those listed below (all hours listed assume a 30 min. break). Pay for this position is $20/hr.

EXPERIENCE/SKILLS

  • Previous bakery experience, specifically with breads/artisan breads and doughs is required.
  • Comfort with working with bread ovens, convection ovens and large mixers is required.
  • ServSafe Certification or extensive knowledge in food safety practices is required.
  • Good basic math skills and knowledge of baker’s percentages is strongly preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work calmly and efficiently in a fast-paced kitchen environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Positive attitude and the ability to work well with others in a small work environment.

Responsibilities
  • Mix, proof, shape, and bake artisan and standard breads for sale and kitchen service.
  • Preparation of all bread mix-ins and flavorings.
  • Maintain and feed several sourdough starters/sponges for bakery use.
  • Assist the owner with flavor/menu planning for seasonal/rotating dishes.
  • Maintain high standards of food safety and sanitation throughout the kitchen.
  • Communicate regularly with the savory kitchen team to determine bread pars for sandwiches and breakfast items.
  • Collaborate with other BOH & FOH team members to keep the bakery running smoothly.
  • Keep an organized inventory of ingredients and prepped items to assist management with food/paper good orders.
  • Perform cleaning tasks at your station at the end of the day, and assist your fellow team members with closing duties.
