Starter Bakery is a wholesale bakery based in Berkeley, supplying fresh pastries and breads to the Bay Area’s most popular farmers’ markets, cafés, and restaurants. We handcraft all our products daily at our dedicated bakery in the East Bay and remain committed to providing the highest-quality in the area. We have been in business for over 10 years and continue to strive for improvement.
Position
We are currently looking for an experienced Bread Baker with shaping and baking experience to help us with our growing production. This is an exclusively on-site position from approximately 3:30am - 12pm (may fluctuate and hour earlier or later on some occasion). Our ideal candidate has attention to detail, works well with a team, is responsible, and loves the craft of making bread.

Responsibilities:

  • Be punctual, and ready to work upon start of shift.
  • Maintain active and professional communication among team members and supervisors.
  • Accurately portion various doughs to specific product weights and counts according to production needs.
  • Accurately follow guidelines for processing dough; preshaping and shaping techniques, fermentation and resting times, retarding and or proofing protocols, and baking specifications.
  • Accurately record relevant data points during production; item counts; times for benching, shaping, retarding, proofing, and baking
  • Maintain a clean work area and equipment; as needed intermittent cleaning throughout the day, through cleaning at closing of shift, deep cleaning of specific areas according to weekly schedule.
  • Follow Starter Bakery operational policies and procedures, including Food Safety Program requirements and procedures at all times.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to learn new things quickly and receive constructive feedback.
  • Ability to read, understand and implement oral and written instructions and request clarification as needed.
  • Have strong interpersonal skills; work well with others in team environment.
  • Be able to communicate with co-workers and managers effectively and professionally.
  • Have a high level of accountability and possess a work ethic that seeks to exceed expectations.
  • Ability to work cleanly, in an organized way with a sense of urgency.
  • Be able to consistently follow recipes and process instructions.
  • Be proficient in using bakery equipment such as scales, dividers, dough rounders, dough shapers, and ovens safely.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to bend, reach and lift, sometimes overhead, holding up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in warm and cold temperatures that may fluctuate.
  • Ability to work in an environment where steam and airborne particles (wheat flour) are present.
  • Ability to work with, handle, operate, and control hot equipment and products in a safe manner.
