DEPARTMENT SUMMARY
The areas reporting to the Associate Vice President include a portfolio of student-focused services designed to support financial wellness, enrollment success, and academic achievement across the UNT community. These include Student Accounting, which manages tuition and fee assessment, collections, exemptions, third-party sponsorships, refunds, and tax reporting; the UNT One Stop, which provides integrated guidance on admissions, enrollment, financial aid, and student accounts; the award-winning Student Money Management Center, which empowers students to build financial confidence through personalized support; and Veterans Benefits, where military-affiliated students and their families receive assistance navigating education benefits and transitioning to campus life.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Budget Officer ensures the integrity and accuracy of financial operations, oversees procurement and personnel transactions, and manages reconciliations across multiple complex budgets. The position ensures that complex and varied budgets — including operating, travel, fees, discretionary, and other funding types — are monitored and reconciled consistently across these units.
The Budget Officer provides comprehensive budgetary, financial, and operational support for the departments that report to the Associate Vice President, including Student Accounting, Veterans Benefits, UNT One Stop, and the Student Money Management Center. These departments deliver essential student services that directly impact enrollment, retention, and overall student success.
The role also serves as a building representative for the Eagle Student Services Center, coordinating daily operations, building projects, and repairs to maintain a functional and student-centered environment. By aligning budget management with facility oversight, the Budget Officer plays a crucial role in maintaining efficient operations that support essential student services.
This position reports to the Associate Vice President, Student Accounting & UNT One Stop.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree with coursework in accounting, finance, business or related field and two years of progressively responsible financial administration or budget management experience or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of higher education budgeting and financial management, including experience with multiple funding sources (state, designated, auxiliary, restricted, and scholarship) and the ability to monitor, reconcile, and report on complex budgets.
Experience with financial transactions, procurement processes, and HR/payroll operations, preferably within a university or large public-sector organization; familiarity with UNT’s systems and procedures is strongly preferred.
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, with the ability to prepare clear and accurate financial reports and presentations to support decision-making.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify trends, evaluate data, and develop actionable recommendations that improve financial stewardship and operational efficiency.
Experience coordinating facilities operations, building projects, or repairs, with the ability to liaise effectively with Facilities and other campus partners to maintain a student-centered environment.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a proven ability to partner with department leaders, staff, and other campus stakeholders to support mission-critical student service operations.
