WHY JOIN US?

  • Clear Vision & Leadership - Work with experienced leaders who know where the project is going and how to get there. Red Hook is led by the original Darkest Dungeon creators.

  • Agency - With the game clearly defined, our team is trusted with real ownership—working without micromanagement and empowered to shape a game the entire team will be proud of.
  • Stability - Red Hook is careful about hiring and firing, seeking to avoid boom and bust cycles. We’re in this for the long game.
  • Beautiful Vancouver - Live and work in one of the most desirable cities in the world. Relocation assistance available.
As a build engineer at Red Hook Studios you will work with the engineering team, production team, and other disciplinary leads to accomplish your goals.

If you become part of our team, this what we expect from you after the first month:

  • To have a familiarity with our existing build system from working directly with the current build engineer.
  • Gathering requirements for our new Unreal Engine build system.

After 3 months:

  • You will be designing and developing the new build system and taking on questions about the old build system.

After 6 months, your work could look like this:

  • Working to ensure the build system meets our needs, creating tools to simplify workflows.
  • Working with our partners to determine build needs and content delivery needs for the future and release.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proven expertise with Unreal Engine (UE4/UE5) build systems and workflows.
  • Strong proficiency in scripting languages such as Python, PowerShell, Bash, or NodeJS.
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD tools (e.g., Jenkins, TeamCity).
  • Deep understanding of source control systems including Perforce, Plastic, and Git.
  • Familiarity with game release pipelines, automated testing frameworks, and live ops tooling.
  • Cross-platform build experience across Windows, macOS, Linux, and consoles.
  • Excellent problem-solving and debugging skills, with a track record of resolving complex technical challenges.
Responsibilities
  • Develop, maintain, and optimize Unreal Engine (UE4/UE5) build systems across PC and console platforms.
  • Own and administer source control systems (Perforce, Plastic, Git), ensuring smooth rollouts and rapid troubleshooting.
  • Collaborate across disciplines—engineering, QA, production—to ensure efficient and reliable build and deployment pipelines.
  • Troubleshoot build failures with urgency, unblocking development teams and minimizing downtime.
  • Automate packaging, versioning, and distribution of builds to keep delivery consistent and secure.
  • Monitor and optimize build performance, reducing build times and resource consumption.
  • Maintain and update Unreal Engine source builds and custom plugins, ensuring stability and compatibility.
  • Safeguard build environments so they are reproducible, secure, and well-documented.
