Description

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or GED. College and /or business coursework preferred.
  • Valid Illinois Driver’s License and clean driving record
  • 3-5 years of previous experience working with all phases of construction practices and building codes, plus 2-3 years in code enforcement or property maintenance inspection is required.
  • Requires skill in reading and interpreting construction specifications/blueprints and ability to inspect work in progress.
  • Knowledge of construction practices, state and local building codes and ordinances is required.
  • Requires ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with contractors, staff and property owners.
  • Requires ICC certification as residential or commercial inspector
  • Computer proficiency with working knowledge of MS Word and ability to learn other systems.
  • Perform basic mathematic computations and generate clear reports
  • Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, follow instructions and make sound decisions.

SKILLS/ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • ICC Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector Certification or ability to obtain certification within first 9 months of employment.
  • Must be able to read, interpret and explain Village codes and ordinances
  • Ability to effectively communicate, orally and in writing
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, residents and elected officials
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and make sound decisions
  • Must be able to handle sensitive or stressful situations with tact and diplomacy.
Responsibilities
  • Responds to and investigates allegations of violations of municipal and property maintenance codes.
  • Issues tickets for municipal ordinances violations relative to property maintenance inspections.
  • Removes (or assists with removing) trash/debris from areas after tickets are issued.
  • Prepares records and detailed reports pertaining to daily activities, enforcement actions and inspections.
  • Ensures all documentation regarding enforcement activities and inspections are legible and filed properly.
  • Testifies in municipal court as required.
  • Accelerates issues to the Deputy Chief or Chief for assistance when needed.
  • Operates and maintains village inspectional service vehicle in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Participates in training, relative to property maintenance inspections and complaint investigations of grass, weeds, shrubbery overgrowth issues and garbage procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
    This is a non-union position that starts at $26.00 per hour
