We’re looking for positive, self-motivated people who take pride in delivering excellent customer service, value the quality of their work, show up reliably for their team, and enjoy working together to make a meaningful impact Job Title: Bulk Department Head Reports to: Grocery Department Manager Status: Full-time, Union Classification Level 4 Starting Pay: $21.99 per hour Wage Range: $21.99 – $26.12 POSITION SUMMARY The Bulk Department Head performs all duties of a Grocery Team Member while also overseeing the operations and success of the bulk department. This includes maintaining clean, well-stocked displays, organize back sock, selecting and ordering products, and supporting the team with clear communication and leadership. This position contributes to department sales, margin, and customer service goals, which support the overall financial health of the store. This is a non-supervisory role that includes collaboration, coordination, and subject-matter expertise. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Customer Service & Team Collaboration Provide excellent, inclusive, and professional customer service to shoppers and coworkers. Communicate clearly and respectfully with team members, customers, and vendors. Demonstrate a strong understanding of co-op principles and values; explain co-op membership and benefits to customers. Attend department and all-staff meetings to stay informed and share updates. Leadership & Training Serve as a point person for the bulk department and provide guidance to Grocery Team Members assisting with bulk-related tasks. Train Grocery Team Members on bulk standards, processes, and food safety practices. Communicate department priorities, systems, and updates to the team; assign tasks as needed. Product Selection, Merchandising & Promotions Collaborate with the Grocery Category Manager on product selection, promotions, pricing strategies, and merchandising. Stay informed about product trends and customer preferences; regularly review sales reports to inform department decisions. Ensure all bulk bins and displays are clean, well-organized, accurately labeled, and attractively merchandised. Support storewide merchandising efforts by contributing to displays and signage that promote sales and an enjoyable shopping experience. Ordering & Inventory Maintain an effective ordering system to ensure proper stock levels and product freshness. Organize and rotate back stock according to First In, First Out (FIFO) standards. Coordinate with the Pricing Department regarding new items, vendor updates, promotions, and price changes. Safety & Compliance Follow all food safety, sanitation, and health department standards. Ensure department cleanliness and safe handling of unpackaged foods. Operate equipment safely and ensure compliance with Co-op policies and procedures. Other Perform regular Grocery Team Member duties as scheduled. Perform other duties as assigned. Requirements At least 1–2 years of experience working in grocery retail, preferably in a natural foods or cooperative setting. Experience working with bulk or natural food products and familiarity with ordering systems or retail inventory management preferred. Strong commitment to providing excellent customer service. Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with coworkers, vendors, and customers. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to multitask. Valid Washington State Food Worker Card (or ability to obtain upon hire). May be required to obtain forklift certification to operate a forklift or other material handling equipment. Proficiency with basic computer programs (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, and email). Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team. Willingness to learn new skills and take on new responsibilities. Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Washington State Food Handler Card. Must be at least 18 years of age. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Ability to stand and walk for extended periods (up to 8 hours per shift) in a fast-paced retail environment while maintaining a calm and professional demeanor. Frequent reaching above shoulder level and crouching or kneeling to fill and clean bulk bins located both high and low to the ground. Regular bending, twisting, and repetitive motion required when scooping, pouring, and labeling bulk items. Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull items weighing up to 60 lbs, including large bags and containers of bulk products. Ability to safely operate equipment such as pallet jacks, ladders, step stools, and forklifts (certification/training provided as needed). Comfortable working in environments with moderate to loud noise levels, including music, paging systems, customer conversations, and equipment operation. Visual and manual dexterity required for reading labels, measuring product, and handling packaging materials with accuracy and safety.
