JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Bulk Lead Department: Bulk
Reports to: Store Manager, Category Manager - Bulk & Perishables
Direct Reports: Bulk Clerks

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Bulk Lead plays a vital leadership role at Amaranth by overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Bulk Department across Calgary stores. This position is responsible for maintaining optimal inventory levels, ensuring safe food handling practices, and supporting sales through efficient receiving, repacking, merchandising, and customer service. The Bulk Lead contributes directly to Amaranth’s vision of creating a better way for us to eat, live, and thrive by maintaining a clean, well-stocked, and customer-focused bulk foods section.

PRIORITY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Lead, Manage, and Hold Accountable (LMA): Provide clear guidance, leadership, and feedback to grocery team members, ensuring accountability and high performance.
  • Quality Control: Ensure proper handling and labeling of bulk products, food safety, accurate pricing, and merchandising that reflects Amaranth standards.
  • Minimize Out of Stocks: Proactively manage inventory levels and ordering systems to reduce gaps in bulk product availability.
  • Product Knowledge: Maintain a strong understanding of bulk products and uses. Share knowledge with the team and customers to support confident buying decisions.
  • In-store Sales: Support in-store sales growth through excellent customer service, well-merchandised displays, and team engagement with promotions and special orders.

SECONDARY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

These accountabilities support the effective completion of the Priority Accountabilities:

  • Coordinate closely with the Category Grocery Manager on bulk product planning and purchasing.
  • Oversee safe and effective repackaging of bulk products for customer sale.
  • Ensure accurate receiving and timely stocking of bulk shipments.
  • Maintain consistent communication with store managers regarding inter-store transfers, product availability, and team support needs.
  • Assist with product selection, inventory analysis, and departmental merchandising.

QUALIFICATIONS AND ATTRIBUTES:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a retail or bulk food environment.
  • Current AHS Food Safety Certification or equivalent (or willingness to obtain).
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills, especially in inventory and database systems.
  • Familiarity with organic and natural food products is an asset.
  • Ability to prioritize and complete tasks in a dynamic, fast-paced setting.

TIME REQUIREMENTS:

  • Full-time hourly position.
  • Flexible working availability, including days, evenings, weekends, and shift coverage as needed.
  • Entitled to a 30-minute unpaid meal break for shifts longer than 5 consecutive hours.

BASIC PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Stand for extended periods of time.
  • Walk, bend, twist, reach above and below shoulders.
  • Use mops, brooms, cleaning supplies, carts, pallet jack, computers, and printers.
  • Use ladders up to 12 feet in height.
  • This role may include lifting items up to 50 lbs. Teamwork and tools, such as carts, are available to support these tasks.
  • Exposure to extreme temperatures (coolers, freezers, outdoors).
Responsibilities

TACTICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

These are the processes that the team member is responsible for executing:

  • Maintain bulk food inventory across Calgary stores, including ordering, receiving, backstocking, and shelf stocking.
  • Physically receive and verify bulk shipments, enter invoices, and maintain accurate database records.
  • Oversee repackaging operations and ensure compliance with food safety standards.
  • Ensure promotional products and end caps are merchandised in a timely and attractive manner.
  • Complete regular reports such as Unreceived, OOS, Negative Inventory, and Discard Reports.
  • Respond to and process inter-store transfer requests quickly and accurately.
  • Maintain a clean and organized bulk section and backstock area, ensuring safe storage and labeling.
  • Support and model exceptional customer service, including responding to inquiries, guiding product selection, and troubleshooting issues.
