Description Position Purpose: Transports children and maintaining their safety. Establishes routes and procedures with the Center Director. Ensures the vehicle is properly maintained and serviced. Maintains a safe and violation free driving record. Essential Functions: Checks to see that each child is buckled in before starting the vehicle. Ensures the children understand the need to keep their seatbelts buckled until the van is parked. Wears seatbelt at all times. Operates the vehicle in accordance with any restrictions noted on license, such as eyeglasses. Abides by the rules of the road and drives defensively at all times. Ensure that Company vehicle policies and state, federal and local ordinances regulating road safety are met. Maintains an accurate count and roster of children being transported. After every trip confirm that no children are left in the vehicle, by counting children and by checking attendance log. Check for any items left in the vehicle. If discipline is necessary while the vehicle is in motion, stops the van in a safe place and resolves the situation. Physically assists children boarding and leaving the vehicle and ensures that all people and obstacles are at a safe distance before operating the vehicle. Avoids backing up whenever possible. Does not operate the van when taking medication that could impair judgment or performance while driving. Notifies Center Director, and does not drive van. Per law and strict company policy, does not use drugs or alcohol at any time while operating vehicle. Sets an example to children by using appropriate language, social skills, etc. Does not eat, drink, smoke or use cell phone while driving. Maintains an awareness of appropriate maintenance of the van and coordinates with the Director regarding maintenance and repairs. Adapts to schedule changes as required Requirements Must be licensed to drive in New York State Must be 21 years of age or older and have no accidents or citations on driving record. PPD Test Required prior to start date (Results no more than 1 year old)
