EDUCATION

  • High School Diploma or possession of a High School Equivalency Certificate (GED).
  • Vocational or technical training in Machine Shop Repair

TWELVE (12) MONTHS FOLLOWING THE ACHIEVEMENT OF A PARTICULAR GRADE LEVEL (I.E. GRADES D, C, B, A AND AA), AN INCUMBENT MAY BE ADVANCED TO THE NEXT GRADE LEVEL PROVIDED HE/SHE HAS TAKEN AND PASSED ANY REQUIRED WRITTEN OR PRACTICAL TESTS, ACQUIRED ANY REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS AND HAS MET ACCEPTABLE FITNESS FOR DUTY, WORK RECORD AND JOB PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS.

  • Level D
  • Two (2) year experience as a Machinist or a related role. Must satisfactorily pass all required internal tests and or required internal certification/promotion tests
  • Level C
  • One (1) year experience as a Machinist D or a related role. Must satisfactorily pass all required internal tests and or required internal certification/promotion tests
  • Level B
  • One (1) year experience as a Machinist C or a related role. Must satisfactorily pass all required internal tests and or required internal certification/promotion tests
  • Level A
  • One (1) year experience as a Machinist B or a related role. Must satisfactorily pass all required internal tests and or required internal certification/promotion tests
  • Level AA
  • One (1) year experience as a Machinist A or a related role. Must satisfactorily pass all required internal tests and or required internal certification/promotion tests
  • Levels AA Lead
  • Six (6) years¿ experience as a Machinist or a related role

JOB SUMMARY

The Bus Machinist is responsible for the design, planning, layout, fabrication, and repair of rapid transit vehicle systems and related equipment. The employee uses various hand powered tools and precision measuring instruments to meet work requirements. The employee performs precision measurement, set-up and operation of metal removing machines, and the parts, tools and equipment associated with metal fabrication of Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA)¿s buses.
Job Levels: At each successive grade level of this job (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), the incumbent is expected to demonstrate increased, distinguishing levels of proficiency and efficiency in knowledge, skills and abilities when performing the assigned duties and essential functions described in this job description
¿AA Lead¿ Level: In addition to independently performing the most complex aspects of the duties and essential functions described, the incumbent is responsible for ensuring work responsibilities of a group or team are properly completed in a timely manner and acts in the absence of the supervisor as required.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performs metal fabrication, repairs, inspections, required adjustments, testing, troubleshooting, cleaning, lubrication and scheduled maintenance on assigned bus equipment, in accordance with wiring diagrams, schematics, operation manuals and manufacturer’s instructions, for the purpose of maintaining the appearance and safe operation of the vehicles.
  • Performs preventive, scheduled, unscheduled and/or corrective maintenance. Troubleshoots and tests all vehicle systems, subsystems and components using precision measuring equipment, such as meggars and multi-meters, Micrometers, oscilloscopes, signal generators, and other instruments as required. Operates special shop equipment (cranes, hoists, lifts), and uses various hand tools to maintain vehicles in a safe operating condition and meet mandated requirements.
  • May develop specifications from general descriptions and draw/sketch or fabricate damaged or replacement parts and determine dimensions and tolerances of the piece to be machined. Utilizes tools, materials and machines required and follows the appropriate sequence of operations to complete the work.
  • Sets up and operates machine tools, fits and assembles parts, fabricates, repairs, refurbishes and refinishes defective metal parts and structures, applying the knowledge of mechanics, metal properties, layout, machining procedures and shop mathematics.
  • Verifies conformance of work piece to specifications using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, dial indicators, calibrated rulers and veneer calipers.
  • Disassembles, replaces and overhauls bus wheel/axle assemblies and sub-assemblies. Sets-up and operates wheel and axle shop specialty equipment (wheel lathe, wheel bore and wheel press). Verifies and performs appropriate quality control checks and heat shrink fits in accordance with manufacturer’s, industry and/or WMATA specifications and standards using precision measuring tools Performs magnetic inspections using magnaflux equipment to determine defects (surface cracks) in bus axles to ensure the vehicle is in a safe operating condition.
  • Lifts machined parts manually or with hoists and overhead cranes, connects wiring and hydraulic lines, and repairs or replaces faulty wiring, switches or relays.
  • Dismantles devices and removes defective parts, and inspects used parts and equipment for changes in calibration, dimensional requirements according to manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Implements engineering design changes and manufacturer’s service instructions to Bus Services and WMATA support systems and prepares requisitions for parts and materials from supply storerooms and vendors.
  • Moves and arranges machined parts manually or with hoists to provide items necessary to ensure a safe workspace.
