Business Insider is hiring an editorial fellow to join our Business Contributors team to tell narrative stories about the news. Business Insider is for people who are driven, optimistic and always looking forward. Our mission is to inspire action through thought-provoking stories. We tell our audience what they want and need to know to improve their lives and the world with storytelling that is accessible, smart, sometimes unexpected, and always helpful. Our team members embody and uphold Business Insider’s three core values: we are all one team, we are effective, and we strive to get better every day. The Business Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months, they are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers. This role requires you to work for 40 hours a week. Applications are due October 20. The Role & Team: The Business Contributors team helps humanize our business, tech, and innovation coverage by working across the entire Business Insider newsroom to bring new voices — contributors, thought leaders, experts, personal essayists, authors, and more — to the site. We publish first-person stories (many told as-told-to style) from all rungs of beacon companies that highlight relatable experiences and emotions while showcasing broader business themes. The Business Contributors Fellow will help us to expand our contributor coverage by finding authoritative sources, brainstorming compelling angles, interviewing people, and writing, fact-checking, and editing a steady pipeline of lively, smart, conversational first-person stories aimed at our business audience. The fellow should have a knack for spotting and telling compelling human-interest stories related to tech, money, innovation, and business news. You should be comfortable interviewing and communicating with people and have an endless curiosity about people’s lives, careers, and stories. The role is an excellent opportunity to interview and write as-told-to stories and to edit the work of other writers. Previous professional writing and storytelling experience is a huge asset. This role will be based in New York. Fellows are expected to come into the office at least two days per week. Key Responsibilities: Pitching new story and source ideas daily Sourcing, interviewing, and reporting as-told-to stories Fact-checking and editing drafts Contributing to daily and weekly brainstorms Building stories in a CMS Collaborating on cross-team projects The ideal candidate has: A passion for human-interest stories related to tech, money, innovation, and business news — should be an enthusiastic consumer of news sites, social media, podcasts, and newsletters. A deep curiosity about people’s lives and voracious reading habits An ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team Proofreading, copyediting, and fact-checking skills Experience reporting and writing (school publications are great) An ability to problem solve independently and a willingness to learn and incorporate feedback A good sense of what Business Insider readers will find interesting The initiative and drive to pitch writers, story ideas, and books for coverage Experience writing headlines and social copy Experience working and inputting stories into a CMS A good eye for photo/visual information An ability to file multiple stories per week Strong time-management skills An excitement for reaching a smart, diverse, ambitious, and motivated audience of people who are actively trying to grow both professionally and personally. Additionally, all of our editorial fellows should have: A passion for digital storytelling and voracious reading habits Familiarity with digital and social media The ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team A love of Business Insider and our mission to serve readers with the information and inspiration they need in a way that’s accurate, fair, fast, and fun Salary & Benefits: Fellows are paid $20 per hour (overtime when needed and approved) PTO and paid holidays Eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits Please apply with a resume and cover letter and specify why you're interested in working on this team.
