Description

Twist Bioscience is seeking a strategic and execution-oriented Director or Senior Director of Business Development (title commensurate with experience) to lead business development initiatives across our NGS and Synthetic Biology businesses. This is a high-impact, visible role responsible for sourcing, structuring, and executing partnerships, licensing agreements, and strategic alliances that unlock growth opportunities and expand Twist’s commercial and scientific impact.
The successful candidate will work closely with the VP of Marketing & product and SVP of sales & support, and will serve as a key contributor to the company’s strategic planning and corporate development efforts.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • 8+ years of relevant experience in the life sciences industry, with at least 5 years in business development, corporate strategy, or related roles.
  • Advanced scientific degree preferred (BS, MS, or PhD in Biology, Genomics, Biotech, or related field); MBA is a plus.
  • Deep understanding of the genomics, NGS, and synthetic biology landscapes, including key technologies, competitive dynamics, and market trends.
  • Proven track record of executing complex deals and partnerships in the biotech or life sciences sectors. A deal sheet demonstrating breadth and impact of prior deals is a plus.
  • Strong business and financial acumen; ability to build compelling business cases and evaluate commercial and scientific opportunities.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with R&D, product development, and commercial teams to align strategic initiatives and ensure execution success.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, presentation, and negotiation skills.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
  • High integrity, strong work ethic, and a hands-on, team-first leadership style.
Responsibilities
  • STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP:Develop and execute a comprehensive business development strategy that supports the expansion and commercialization of Twist’s NGS and Synthetic Biology platforms.
  • OPPORTUNITY IDENTIFICATION & EVALUATION:Source, evaluate, and prioritize external partnership opportunities, including licensing, strategic collaborations, joint ventures, and M&A prospects in line with company objectives.
  • DEAL STRUCTURING & EXECUTION:Lead deal negotiations from inception to close. Structure innovative, value-creating agreements across a spectrum of opportunities, working cross-functionally with Legal, Finance, R&D, and Commercial teams.
  • PIPELINE & PORTFOLIO CONTRIBUTION:Provide strategic insights and market intelligence to guide internal investment decisions and influence the future direction of the company’s product and technology pipeline.
  • EXECUTIVE ENGAGEMENT:Present strategic recommendations to senior leadership and the executive team; lead external engagement with prospective partners, collaborators, and investors.
  • INTEGRATION PLANNING:Collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure seamless integration and execution of signed partnerships, maximizing their impact on business goals.
  • COMPLIANCE & QUALITY:Ensure all activities comply with applicable regulatory standards including ISO 13485 and other relevant quality requirements.
