The Law Enforcement Records Bureau gathers, analyzes, and disseminates criminal justice data used by New Mexico law enforcement, criminal justice, corrections, courts, and civil agencies to ensure public safety. The bureau maintains complete and accurate records and responds to the needs of the public, law enforcement and criminal justice agencies providing support and customer engagement through our many applications, programs, and services to achieve the mission objectives.
Why does the job exist?
This position is responsible for processing Inspection of Public Records Act (IPRA) requests and conducting research and performing background investigations for highly sensitive positions. The incumbent will interact with various Department of Public Safety (DPS) division staff to produce requested data for agency’s response to IPRA requests, ensuring compliance of the Act while adhering to agency policies and procedures, as well as state and federal laws. In addition, this position will perform multiple types of background investigations that include investigation of political appointees, investigations of applicants and recruits for the New Mexico State Police, investigation of applicants for solid waste permits, as well as other investigations. The incumbent will be expected to provide tactical analysis of complex criminal information and highly confidential and sensitive personal data from multiple sources to authenticate identities and backgrounds of individuals under investigation.
How does it get done?
1. Manage Records Requests (40%): Coordinates intake, tracking, and timely response to public records requests using the department’s portal. Ensures deadlines are met and facilitates cross-unit collaboration.
2. Stakeholder Liaison and Compliance Guidance (25%): Acts as the main contact for internal and external inquiries. Compliant with federal and state public records laws.
3. Review and Redact Records (20%): Reviews documents for completeness and redacts protected information in line with legal standards and confidentiality requirements.
4. Legal Coordination and Response Development (15%): Works with legal counsel to ensure responses meet disclosure laws and exemptions. Drafts formal responses when appropriate.

Minimum Qualification
High School diploma or Equivalency and two (2) years of experience in office administration, budgeting, purchasing, finance, accounting, auditing, cash management, contract management, and/or the procedures of business and management principles involved in strategic planning. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling two (2) years may substitute for the required experience.
Employment Requirements
Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and fingerprinting in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations; and is conditional pending results. Continued employment is contingent upon remaining felony free, per Section 5.12.1.1 of the Criminal Justice Information Systems Security Policy.
In addition, the selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and a current Defensive Driving Certificate from the State of New Mexico; or pass and receive the Defensive Driving Certificate.
Working Conditions
Office setting, exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal and extensive personal computer and telephone usage with extended periods of sitting. Must be able to lift and carry 30 lbs. Subject to a national fingerprint-based record checks within 30 days of assignment. Continued employment is contingent upon remaining felony free, per Section 5. 12. 1.1 of the Criminal Justice Information Systems Security Policy.
