As a Firearms Examiner in the Forensic Firearms and Toolmark Laboratory, you will provide high-quality, timely, accurate, and reliable forensic science services using best practices and best available technology. Primary duties include:
- Perform sophisticated analysis and evaluation of firearms, toolmarks, and shooting related evidence.
- Prepare technical written reports of laboratory examinations and communicate directly with law enforcement, attorneys, and other agencies regarding results.
- Prepare evidence in order to provide expert court testimony as to findings.
- Maintain records and files, and store and maintain continuity of evidence.
- Keep abreast of scientific advancements in the science of Firearms and Toolmark Identification.
- Perform shooting reconstruction at shooting/crime scenes.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A Bachelor of Science, or Bachelor of Forensic Science degree with an emphasis on natural/physical sciences.
- Successful completion of an understudy training program in Firearms and Toolmark Identification comparable to the two-year course of study described in the Association of Firearm and Toolmark Examiners (AFTE) Training Manual.
- A minimum of 3 years related experience is required.
- Training in projectile impact damage assessment and projectile path analysis is required.
- Demonstrated competency in firearm and toolmark evidence examination and identification and gunshot residue evidence examination and identification are also required.
- Competencies for this position include: Coaching and development, communication, efficiency and thoroughness, planning and prioritizing/visionary; relationship building, self-confidence, service orientation.
Working Conditions: The position is expected to be exposed to caustic chemicals, blood, human tissue, dead bodies, potentially unsafe firearms and outdoor elements of heat and cold.
PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
- An enhanced security clearance and pre-employment polygraph will be conducted.
- Applicants will be tested for appropriate skills.
- Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications. Education obtained from out of country must have or be able to obtain, an Education Credential Assessment (ECA) for confirmation of equivalent credentials.
