Job Title: Camp Cook – Overnight Camp
Pay Range: $840 - $1,144 per week
FLSA Status: Exempt
Location: YMCA Camp Bishop
Reports to: Director of Camp Bishop
Camp Dates: July 1st-August 15th, 2025

POSITION SUMMARY:

Lives and works onsite at camp to provide meals that meet the Y-USA Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Standards. Provide leadership, support, and instruction to kitchen staff including volunteers. Represents the YMCA and self in a professional manner of safety and fun.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum 21 years of age.
  • Six months or more of related experience preferred
  • Preferred: Experience in child Leadership and/or related activities experience.
  • Positive attitude and previous experience with children and diverse populations
  • Knowledge and skills in meal preparation for 150 people plus.
  • Preferred: Knowledge and skills in camper and peer leadership, group and interpersonal dynamics, child behavior and typical camp activities.
  • CPR, First Aid, AED certifications, online trainings and Child Abuse prevention training prior to start of camp season (provided by the Y).
  • Required participation in staff training.
    Pay Structure: As a seasonal recreation facility, Camp Bishop is exempt from minimum wage requirements. Staff are paid a daily stipend, rounded to the half day. In accordance with state and federal law for seasonal recreation employment, staff are given 24 hours of rest time for every 7 days worked, as well as room and board while camp is in session. Additionally, staff are given daily breaks as required.

Responsibilities

Program Delivery:

  • Promote a positive environment that fosters fun, safety and meaningful experiences for campers.
  • Develops and orders all kitchen supplies and food.
  • Direct the preparation of all snacks and meals.
  • Oversees the cleaning and organization of the kitchen and food supply.
  • Meets USDA nutrition guidelines and Y-USA Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Standards (HEPA)
  • Ensures that all meals and snacks are served at the scheduled time, hot and fresh.
  • Cleans and organizes the kitchen, dining hall, and cabin each week on Friday, ensuring areas are ready for weekend rentals.
  • Recognize individual and group situations and effectively resolve conflicts based on camp values and procedures.
  • Maintain open communication and proactively work to build strong relationships with Co-leaders & Leadership staff.
  • Assume other responsibilities as mutually agreed upon with a supervisor.
  • Consult Staff Manual for additional “All Staff” responsibilities, qualifications, and personnel policies.
  • Provide supervision and direction to youth volunteers during all times they are in the kitchen.
