Founded in 1918, CNIB is one of Canada’s oldest charities. For more than 60 years, CNIB Lake Joe has been providing exciting, safe, and accessible camp experiences for Canadians with sight loss. CNIB Lake Joe is looking for a Camp Counsellor to help us bring the magic of summer camp to life for ‘kids of all ages’ with sight loss, and their families!

Your Impact at CNIB

  • Energetically and inclusively facilitate and support programming, as assigned, and adapt programs so that they are accessible for all participants. Programs include: adventure, leadership, music, sports, visual arts and special programs.
  • Assist guests by taking an active role in all dining room duties, including serving meals, meal set up and clean up
  • Provide support, guidance and leadership to volunteers, guests, and visitors.
  • Set up the assigned program area and ensure that all required equipment and materials are available. Clean up the program after the program is completed. Report any low materials or issues with equipment to the appropriate Section Head.
  • On a rotational basis, be part of the Emergency Response Team, which includes being on call, present on site and available to respond to emergencies.
  • Promote and encourage participation in programs through endorsement of activities to guests.
  • Maintain documentation of any accidents or incidents and provide this documentation to the appropriate leadership member.
  • During youth weeks: Camp counsellors will be responsible for the health and safety of campers while in our care. This will include being on call (on rotation) overnight within the cabin in case of emergencies. Camp counsellors will be assigned to a camper group and as a team, will be responsible for ensuring the overall mental, physical and emotional well-being of campers.
  • During the spring season: Setting up program areas and ensuring that all required resources are available and helping with small maintenance tasks.

Who you are:

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • Current (within 6 months of start date) Vulnerable Sector Police Record Check. For candidates under the age of 18, a Statutory Declaration must be signed in lieu of a Police Check.
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR “C”.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in camp or other recreation programs.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including patience, empathy and communication. Ability to work flexible hours in a changing and busy environment and work outside for extended period of time.
  • A combination of relevant education and experience will be considered.
  • Personal or professional experience relating to blindness and sight loss is considered an asset.
  • Personal or professional experience working with assistive technology and/or accessible environments is considered an asset.
