CAMP EDUCATOR (SEASONAL) DEPARTMENT Conservation/Education CLASSIFICATION Non-Exempt REPORTS TO Group & Family Programs Supervisor DIRECT REPORTS N/A STARTING PAY $15.25/Hour   POSITION DESCRIPTION: Under general direction, the Camp Educator delivers/supervises Day Camp, Holiday Camp & Summer Camp education programs and activities, including, but not limited to, crafts, tours, behind-the-scenes experiences and animal encounters. This position also assists with organizing and maintaining all camp program materials, supervises participants and occasionally aids with curriculum development.   This is a seasonal position.  Selected candidates must be available to work Monday-Friday, up to 40 hours per week, during the Summer Camp Season (June-August).  Opportunities for earlier start dates and/or season extensions are available, with flexible hours.     POSITION DUTIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Duties Percentage Delivering camp education programs, including: * Organizing and leading fun-filled daily activities of camp participants which may include crafts, games, songs, tours, animal feedings and classroom instruction. * Responsible for safety and wellbeing of campers. * Integrate Conservation messages into camp activities experiences campers are able to act on behalf of wildlife. * Mentoring teen volunteers assisting with camp programs. * Communicating with parents about camper experiences and reporting concerns to camp leadership. * Represents the Zoo & Aquarium in a positive manner by maintaining a positive attitude and delivering exceptional customer service. * Maintaining knowledge of all emergency procedures and enforcing camp rules. * Assisting in accurate maintenance of program records, which may include, but not limited to incident reports, supply/equipment maintenance logs, rosters, etc. * Cleaning, maintaining, and ensuring proper use of camp facilities and equipment. * Serves as a team player in the Conservation & Education Department by supporting the department’s goals. * Participating in weekly staff meetings. 85% Assists in the development and enhancement of programs, including: * Resource gathering and maintenance. * Administrative support. * Assists with facilitating and implementing the mission, strategic plan, and core values of the Zoo and Aquarium. 15% *This position may at times be requested to perform other duties or special projects as assigned, which are in the best interest of the Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium.   *All employees must be able to perform the essential functions of this position satisfactorily and, upon request, reasonable accommodations will be made to enable employees with disabilities to perform the essential functions of their job, absent undue hardship.       MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 1. EDUCATION & FORMAL TRAINING: 1. High School diploma or GED, preferred. 2. Course work in education, biological sciences or related field, preferred. 2. EXPERIENCE: 1. Experience working with children/teens ages 5-17 in a formal or informal education setting, preferred. 2. Previous education, zoo, aquarium or museum related experience preferred. 3. Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office and audio-visual equipment, required. 4. Strong verbal and written communication skills. 3. OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: 1. Must be comfortable working outside for long periods in all types of weather. 2. Valid driver’s license preferred. 3. Must be able to lift 50 pounds, with or without assistance. Assistance depending upon task. 4. Position may require animal contact/proximity. 5. Must be flexible and possess strong organization and time management skills. 6. Must pass a background and drug screening. 7. Must be willing to become CPR/First Aid certified.
