TRAINING ADVISOR JOB DESCRIPTION

LOCATION: Ontario, Greater Toronto Area (GTA)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated experience using the ADDIE instructional design methodology.
  • Excellent facilitation and presentation skills in both classroom and virtual environments.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Proven ability to collaborate and build relationships across teams and departments.
  • Strong digital skills; experience designing with tools such as Articulate Storyline is an asset.
  • Experience working in or supporting a railway company is preferred.
  • Familiarity with learning management systems (preferred).
  • Experience operating or training on railway track maintenance and construction machinery is an asset.
  • Experience in track inspection on a railway is an asset

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • 3-5 years of experience in a similar role in training and development.
  • 5 years operating railway track maintenance and construction machinery.
  • Experience in assessing and identifying training needs, development of training materials, including on-line, paper and other methods, and formal classroom presentation.
  • Understanding of legal and regulatory requirements associated with Health & Safety.
  • Excellent PC software applications skills in areas such as the Microsoft office suite especially Excel. Experience of other learning management tools would be beneficial.
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License
  • Certification in Canadian Railway Operating Rules is required.
  • Certification in railway “Track Inspection Guidelines” or equivalent is required.
  • Ability to travel as needed.

Responsibilities

MAIN PURPOSE:

Reporting to the Training Lead, the Training Advisor is responsible for coordinating & scheduling training, supervising trainees and coaches, designing and teaching course curriculum, maintaining records of trainee performance and gathering feedback on quality of training from trainees, coaches, supervisors and managers. The Training Advisor will prepare, coordinate, and evaluate educational programs for our employees to ensure employees develop their skills and foster career advancement.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise mentees and mentors working in conjunction with the training and development department.
  • Apply the ADDIE model (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, Evaluate) to develop and maintain effective training programs.
  • Conduct training needs analyses to identify gaps and align learning outcomes with operational and safety objectives.
  • Design and develop content for a variety of delivery formats including instructor-led, eLearning, and on-the-job (OJT) training.
  • Facilitate in-person sessions and lead engaging training across multiple topics including technical, soft skills, and safety.
  • Support onboarding and orientation of new hires to ensure successful integration.
  • Support upskilling and training advancement for current staff.
  • Evaluate training effectiveness and apply insights to continuously improve content and delivery.
  • Coordinate training schedule to ensure proper placement of trainees and coaches
  • Maintain accurate training records and support compliance with regulatory training requirements.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders including production, safety, and HR teams to align training initiatives with business priorities.
  • Actively participate in and support continuous improvement projects and organizational learning culture.
  • Ensure all training and development sessions are organized with all required materials, personnel, etc.
  • Research and recommend technology or equipment to enhance learning (e.g. platforms, software, simulators, etc.).
  • Calculate, understand, and report on training costs.
  • Perform other duties as required.
