POSITION SUMMARY: The Capacity Developer is responsible for working with community groups around issues that affect their health and well-being. These issues include social determinants of health such as poverty, housing and social isolations from a health equity lens. The Capacity Developer works with the community to identify needs, capacities and to develop strategies and implement action. The position is also responsible for supporting centre-wide health promotion and community development activities by conducting community needs assessments and coordinating, developing, monitoring and evaluating community development and community-led health promotion initiatives within the framework of WOCRC’s priorities and strategic direction. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: DIRECT SERVICE: * Identify and develop strategies to support community development initiatives. This may include writing and developing proposals for program fund development, and supporting community groups to develop proposals; * Develop strategies that contribute to strengthening individuals and communities, through capacity building and facilitation; * Support the design and development of community needs assessments. ADVOCACY: * Participate in broad-based community planning and development; * Participate in advocacy and coordination committees about services available, gaps in services and issues affecting the community. COMMUNITY EDUCATION: * Present to community groups on issues and services; * Participate in internal and external meetings, public education events and media contacts as delegated. TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT: * Provide training to community groups; * Support and train volunteers as needed. EVALUATION: * Prepare and maintain all necessary documentation and statistics related to all activities on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis; * Participate in the development and implementation of clients and/or program evaluation as required. KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS: * Undergraduate degree in health or social sciences or an equivalent combination of education and significant related experience; * Three to five years of experience in community development/health promotion working with the populations and demographics as assigned; * Working knowledge of community development values, principles and the political process; * Demonstrated ability to work with the communities in a manner consistent with the Health Equity and Inclusion Lens; * An understanding of issues experienced by rural and suburban populations; * Experience in needs analysis, monitoring and evaluation; * Proven abilities in the area of community organizing, conflict resolution, and advocacy; * Training and experience in group facilitation and public speaking; * Knowledge of social services delivery in Ottawa; * Ability to develop and implement programs using an inter-disciplinary collaborative approach; * Demonstrated ability to work within an Equity inclusion framework; * Demonstrated commitment to and knowledge of community-based model of intervention; * Demonstrated commitment to and knowledge of a feminist and anti-oppression framework; * Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle required, including $2 million in liability insurance.
