Description of Work The captain’s position oversees maintenance and interpretation of the 16th century sailing vessel the Elizabeth II and all associated small watercraft. This position leads the volunteer crew sailing program including training, recruitment, monthly crew weekend training sessions, and administrative tasks related to the volunteer program. The position will work with ports-of-call, park leadership, and other stakeholders to plan and execute training sails, outreach sails, and routine haul out. The Elizabeth II is maintained in accordance with historical practices using skills and materials from that period. The Elizabeth II captain position is public facing and reports to the Manager of Education and Interpretation. Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Coordinating with the U.S. Coast Guard to ensure yearly inspections and maintain current knowledge of all regulations associated with moving watercraft in navigable waterways. Training staff and volunteers in rigging, sail making, caulking, and marine woodworking. Conducting educational programs and events and speaking in front of diverse audiences. Sailing the Elizabeth II as needed. Section/Unit Description: Roanoke Island Festival Park is a 27-acre site. First opening in 1983 with the “Elizabeth II”, a 16th century replica sailing vessel, a visitor/ticket sales center, offices, and a 50-seat auditorium. In 1998 an expansion project was completed, adding an 8,500 sq.ft. Adventure Museum; a 240-seat film/small performance indoor theatre; 3,0000-sq.ft. meeting room; an outdoor performance pavilion with lawn seating for 3,500; a museum store; administrative offices; maintenance facilities; waterside boardwalks; and a public Kayak Launch. Division Description: The Division of State Historic Sites was established to coordinate administration of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources’ State Historic Sites Program, which includes 27 historic sites across North Carolina and Division offices located in Raleigh.
