A brainstem stroke occurs when blood flow to the brainstem—the control centre for vital functions like breathing, heart rate, and balance—is interrupted, leading to severe and potentially life-threatening consequences. Symptoms can include vertigo, double vision, difficulty breathing or swallowing, and severe imbalance, and may be complex and hard to diagnose. The stroke can also result in a "locked-in" syndrome, where a person is conscious but unable to move or speak What is locked in syndrome. Locked-in syndrome (LIS) is a severe neurological condition where a person is conscious and fully aware but cannot move or speak due to complete paralysis of almost all voluntary muscles. Causes often include brainstem damage from strokes or brain injuries, with communication typically relying on eye movements like blinking. Symptoms include quadriplegia, anarthria (inability to speak), and preservation of consciousness, cognition, and vertical eye movement. While there is no cure, supportive care, assistive technology, and rehabilitation can improve quality of life.
