We are ranked as the third in the country for research, embedding education and training across the organisation. Our main hub is the Queen Alexandra Hospital, which is one of the largest hospitals on the south coast employing over 8,700 staff. Our patients come from all walks of life and so do we. We hire great people from a wide variety of backgrounds because it makes our hospital stronger. If you share our values and our enthusiasm for getting it right for patients, colleagues, and our community, you will find a home at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust. Job Description The Women and Children’s Care Group requires a leader who can pair hard-edged operational management with a deep commitment to patient safety and experience. Overseeing Maternity, Neonatal, and Paediatric services, you will lead a service that is under intense national scrutiny and carries the highest levels of clinical risk. This role is about creating an environment where clinical excellence can flourish through psychological safety and rigorous operational governance. You will work alongside the Clinical Director and Senior Matron to foster a "learning culture." Your role is to ensure that the Care Group structure is fit for purpose to deliver both national safety mandates (such as the Ockenden/Kirkup requirements in Maternity) and local business objectives. You will manage a complex budget that requires balancing the high costs of specialized clinical staffing with the need for efficiency and innovation. Key Responsibilities Quality & Governance: Ensure 100% compliance with the Trust’s Assurance Framework and lead the management of complex clinical risks. Stakeholder Engagement: Represent the Care Group at local and regional levels, developing partnerships with ICS (Integrated Care System) stakeholders to improve maternal and child health outcomes. People Leadership: Actively act on staff survey feedback to improve the working lives of our midwives, nurses, and doctors, promoting a culture of openness and continuous improvement. Interviews for this vacancy will take place on Monday 9th February 2026 Qualifications Educated to Degree level or equivalent qualification/experience. Post Graduate Qualification or equivalent. Evidence of continuing professional development including management studies to master’s level or above or equivalent experience. Significant experience working on both strategic and operational matters. Significant NHS/Public sector experience and knowledge and understanding of the NHS system reform policy and other key policy drivers. Demonstrable success in building, leading, motivating and developing multi-disciplinary teams as highly effective people manager. Experience of leadership of complex operational change/project management while also developing and maintaining high standards of quality. Additional Information The health and wellbeing of our staff is at the forefront of everything we do.
