Germanna Community College is a public, open access institution of higher education in the Virginia Community College System. Germanna Community College is centrally located in Fredericksburg, VA between Washington D.C. and Richmond and between the Blue Ridge mountains and the Chesapeake Bay. Full of history, the area offers a community rich with diversity, the arts, technology, vineyards, hiking, canoeing/kayaking and many other activities.
Germanna is currently seeking a Career Services Advisor as part of its Title III: Strengthening Institutions Program. The primary purpose of this position is to provide comprehensive career advising to students, develop and increase student participation in experiential learning to include Work Based Learning (WBL) activities such as work site tours, internship opportunities, and registered apprenticeships, support student advising activities within Career and Transfer Services, and expand Germanna’s WBL student programming. The Advisor’s role includes efforts that enable students and job seekers engagement in career-related activities that will support and secure industry-relevant skills, and advancement to higher levels of education and employment. In addition to providing WBL advising services for Germanna students, the Advisor will provide individual and group training on using online career skill-building tools and software, facilitate professional development workshops, and coordinate employer partnerships. Ideal candidates are passionate about increasing student work based learning experiences, increase student’s internship attainment and job placement. The Career Services Advisor will have a working understanding on how career-related learning experiences can help achieve student learning outcomes. This is classified full-time position with State benefits and is currently partially grant funded.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least three (3) or more years of experience working in career advising, workforce development, or related employment support services.
  • Experience developing, promoting, or coordinating internship, apprenticeship, employment or experiential learning opportunities with employer partnerships.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Skills in developing, marketing, and implementing workshops, programs, and career-related events including career fairs and employer recruiting events.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, administrators, employer stakeholders, and community partners.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to include evenings and weekends as needed for special programming and events.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with experience in group facilitation and individual advising.
  • Experience managing a caseload with ability to prioritize interventions and maintain accurate case documentation
  • Experience with data collection, outcome tracking, and program assessment for continuous improvement
  • Knowledge of labor market trends, industry certifications, and workforce development initiative
Responsibilities
  • Provide career-related advising including career and academic planning and goal setting
  • Assist students in developing skills in career exploration, preparation, and readiness
  • Assist students to connect with internship, apprenticeships, job-placement, or academic transfer opportunities
  • Establish and identify mechanisms that foster increased student WBL engagement and individual academic-to-employment connections
  • Provide student-centered training to facilitate use of work-based learning and career software
  • Develop career-focused resources and learning environments supporting engagement with all students.
  • Participate in professional development or training activities related to experiential learning and career services.
  • Maintain records of student advising sessions and outcomes
  • Support objectives of Germanna’s Title III Strengthening Institution Program grant
