JOB SUMMARY This position is located in the Maintenance Division of the Airport Department of the City of Oklahoma City and is under the direction of an immediate supervisor. An eligibility list will be established or supplemented for filling future vacancies per provisions of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Collective Bargaining Agreement. The workers in this classification may work alone, in pairs, or in a group to complete assigned tasks. An employee in this classification performs work of a skilled nature, utilizing knowledge and skills acquired previously. Essential job functions include: construction and remodeling projects, and repair and maintenance of office areas, furniture, cabinets, etc. A Carpenter uses various carpentry techniques and equipment to perform repair, maintenance, and construction tasks. The nature of this position requires the worker to assume full responsibility for following all procedures related to work safety and equipment maintenance. The worker receives both written and verbal orders and carries out assignments independently. The work product is subject to inspection by the supervisor upon completion. Subject to working on ladders, scaffolding, or other equipment up to 12 feet above ground level. Subject to working in cramped or confined spaces and positions when repairing or installing ceiling structures. Subject to working near moving machinery and power tools. Frequent exposure to pronounced strain or vibrations, such as those caused by power equipment. Intermittent exposure to allergy-causing agents such as bee and wasp stings. Frequent exposure to chemical irritants such as contact cement, adhesives, cleaning solutions, etc. Possibility of electrical shock when working with electrical equipment (110-480 volts). Local travel on a daily basis. Intermittent exposure to loud and insistent noises caused by power equipment. Intermittent exposure to large amounts of dust at shops and constructions sites. Note: Typical City employee working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Strength enough to lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing up to 80 pounds such as cement bags, plywood sheets, lumber, doors, machinery, etc. Stamina enough to exert oneself physically throughout the workday. Flexibility enough to bend, twist, and reach out to perform skilled carpentry tasks. Mobility enough to continually move oneself from place to place. Balance enough to work from ladders, platforms, scaffolding, etc. Arm-hand steadiness and manual dexterity enough to use power and hand tools such as saws, drills, hammers, etc. Near vision enough to perform duties such as reading blueprints and drawings to measure and cut materials per specification. Visual color discrimination enough to perform duties such as matching grains of wood, paneling, etc. Hearing enough to understand conversation in a noisy environment and to determine location of equipment sounds. Speech and hearing enough to communicate clearly and distinctly in person, by two-way radio, and by telephone. Visual color discrimination enough to perform duties such as distinguishing light signals when working on runways without radio communication.
