Overview The Carpenter is responsible for performing tasks that are basically carpentry oriented and are typical of thosetasks found in maintenance and/or construction. Responsibilities Constructs, repairs, and maintains wood, masonary and metal structures such as furniture, equipment,partitions, and other parts of hospital and related buildings.Constructs, repairs, and maintains brick and drywall.Constructs, repairs, installs, and maintains wood and metal framework, subflooring, sheathing, partitions, floorjoints, studding, rafters, molding, paneling, lath, door frames, doors, door hardware, stairs, steps, linoleum,floor tile, base, plastic laminates, ceiling, concrete, cabinets, furniture, window and door glass, drywall, paintingand other related items.Reads blueprints, schematics and related type of drawings and specifications to determine proper layout andaccomplishment of assigned tasks. Calculates and estimates quantity of materials, supplies, and time necessaryto accomplish assigned tasks.Primarily performs carpentry tasks that are related to projects of work that is broad in scope.Performs assigned tasks with either hand or power tools and in accordance with written or oral instructions.Completes sections of service requests, work requests, and/or project forms such as time and date started, timeand date completed, and materials used.May perform minor plumbing and electrical tasks, i.e., remove conduit and electrical wiring in demolition andrenovations. Install boxes, conduit piping for preliminary building under instruction of Electrician andSupervisor.May instruct other personnel in education of job and tool safety and the field of carpentry and may providedirection to Carpenter II.Loads and unloads stock, tools, and supplies from vehicles.Selects stock, tools, and supplies for assigned tasks.Stores stock, tools, and supplies in their assigned location.Operates vehicle as required and maintains a maximum/minimum stock system of supplies and tools on vehicle.Performs first echelon of maintenance to vehicle such as checking and adding oil, gas, air, and water; cleansboth interior and exterior.Maintains work area in a safe and orderly manner.Maintains on-going knowledge of applicable codes pertaining to hospitals and the construction field.May cut keys and repair all type of locks.Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Education (experience can be substituted for education)High School Diploma Required Work Experience (education can be substituted for experience)Up to 1 year Must have four (4) years experience in the carpentry field. The four (4) yearscan be one of the following:A. A combination of successful completion of one (1) year in a technical schooland three (3) years experience in the carpentry field. Each 100 hours oftechnical school over the required 1300 may be substituted for one-half (1/2)year work experience.B. Successful completion of a four (4) year apprenticeship program in theconstruction field.C. Job related experience in functional area totalling 4000 hours.Required Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesMust be skilled in the safe use of hand and power tools.Must be capable of reading and working from blueprints, schematics, and related type drawings andspecifications.Must possess a valid vehicle license and drive vehicle as required.Must be capable of estimating the quantity of materials and time for assigned tasks.Must be capable of performing work which includes, but is not limited to building wood and metal framework andbuildings, subflooring, sheathing, partitions, floor joints, studding and rafters. Proper installation and repair ofmolding, wood paneling, metal and rock lath, cabinets, hospital furniture, windows, door frames, doors, doorhardware, stairs, steps, linoleum, floor tile, base, plastic laminates, ceilings, concrete, window and door glassreplacement, and other related items in this field.Must possess the ability to solve arithmetic and mechanical problems related to building construction in thecarpentry field. Licenses and CertificationsTechnical school(s) must be a combination ofa classroom study and shop experience. Thecourse should contain no less than 1300 hoursand include such subjects as fundamentals ofcarpentry, blueprint reading, specificationpreparation, use of hand and power tools,mathematics, applied science, human relationsand mechanical drawing.
