We are dedicated to continuous education and sharing our gardening guidance with employees and customers alike. Founded in 1971, Merrifield Garden Center is a family run, full-service garden center, nursery, and landscaping company with two locations in Northern Virginia and an extended family of over 500 employees. We are looking for friendly and reliable people to work as cashiers in our two garden centers. Since cashiering requires handling money and credit card transactions, candidates must be very responsible and trustworthy and pay close attention to details. Some of the primary responsibilities include: Greeting customers as they come into the garden center and assist in answering phone calls. Answering questions and directing customers. Handling sales transactions at the checkout counter, which includes scanning items to ensure that pricing is correct, taking money in the form of cash, credit card or check and dispensing correct change. Bagging store products and placing plants on carts and wagons for customers to take to the loading dock. Issuing customer receipts, refunds and credits. Helping coordinate customer deliveries and plantings. Maintaining cleanliness, organization and the proper supplies at the point of sale counter. Maintaining familiarity with other departments and staff members in order to effectively refer customers needing assistance to the correct department or person. Helping in the store or nursery as needed by doing tasks such as restocking, pricing, watering and cleaning. Both full time and part time positions are available. The ideal candidate must possess the following: Friendly, respectful, professional attitude Strong customer service and interpersonal skills Excellent written and verbal communication skills Ability to stand or be physically active for hours at a time Ability to lift and move plants and heavy bagged products Ability to balance a drawer Proficiency in math and computer skills required to operate the point of sale system Retail environment or cashier experience is a plus Evening and weekend availability will be required.
