JOB DESCRIPTION:

Under the direction of the school principal, the Interpreter is responsible for:

  • providing interpreting and other support services to deaf and/or hard of hearing students;
  • facilitates communication among deaf and/or hard of hearing students and their hearing peers, the classroom teacher and other personnel in the school system;
  • offers tutoring and/or note taking services to deaf and/or hard of hearing students when necessary;
  • participates in team meetings and assists the classroom teacher in fostering positive attitudes toward deafness;
  • and performs other duties, as assigned by the Supervisor.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Secondary school diploma;
  • a three year Community college diploma in sign language interpreting;
  • 1.5 years of related experience;
  • excellent communication skills;
  • the ability to establish a rapport and work with individuals on a one-to-one basis;
  • initiative and commitment;
  • and the ability to work as a team member.
  • Individuals who possess an equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.
