While our schools do offer some scheduling flexibility, students are still required to complete approximately 4-6 hours of coursework daily & log attendance (entered by their parent/learning coach and verified by the teacher).  The mission of California Virtual Academy is to provide an exemplary individualized and engaging educational experience for students by incorporating school and community/family partnerships coupled with a rigorous curriculum along with a data-driven and student-centered instructional model. Student success will be measured by valid and reliable assessment data, parent and student satisfaction, and continued institutional growth within the academic community.  Summary:  The MckInney Vento & Foster Specialist provides educational support and programs for homeless and foster youth to ensure full and equal opportunity and resources to succeed in school.  HOURS AND SALARY INFORMATION:  Full time Employees work Monday-Friday from 8:00am-5:00pm You are not allowed to have another job during contracted hours. JOB DESCRIPTION   Job Title: McKinney Vento & Foster Specialist   Reports To: Assistant Director, Engagement & Community, Lead MKV & Foster Specialist FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Department: Compass Overview:  Virtual schools are new models in public education.  They look both backward to what we know works well in educating children, and forward to see how technology can help us implement these strategies with children.  Virtual educators are part of a pioneering effort.  Our teachers and staff, therefore, need to share the school’s pioneering mission and approach.   Essential Duties and Responsibilities: * Stays current with laws, regulations, and policies that impact homeless students and foster youth and shares that information with the school community.   * Gathers and tracks data related to school support for homeless/foster youth. * Assist school staff with the identification of homeless students and maintenance of documentation of housing status.  * Ensure homeless/foster youth are enrolled promptly and have full and equal opportunity to succeed in school. * Collaborate with CAVA staff members to identify MKV/Foster students who are struggling with school engagement and develop strategies to provide the students with additional guidance and support. * Develop and maintain consistent outreach strategies to provide students and families with relevant support information. * Assist homeless youth and their families to identify sources for services or resources they may need through coordination with local social service and community organizations.  Maintain knowledge of community resources and work collaboratively with community agencies who support homeless and foster families.  * Ensure parents/guardians of homeless youth and unaccompanied youth are informed of their educational rights and related opportunities available to their children and provide meaningful opportunities for parents/guardians to participate in the education of their children.  * Maintain detailed documentation on support provided to each student. * Coordinate with county-level organizations and local LEAs to collect and report information on services for eligible students. * Work with the Guidance Counselor team to provide information and support regarding programs or services for rising high school graduates.  * Create and maintain information on the Compass website, Compass Live Binder, and the MKV/Foster Guidebook to inform our school community about MKV/FY support. * Aggregate community resource information for staff members. * Plan, organize, and coordinate staff development activities; including updates regarding legislation that impacts services for homeless and foster youth.   * Attend meetings, conferences, and training to increase understanding and awareness of homeless education and foster youth resources.  * Proctor state/federal test, in-person, as assigned.  * Participate in school-wide activities, as assigned. * Other duties, as assigned.    Requirements/Experience: * Must reside in the state of California. * Previous experience working with at-risk populations.   Preferred experience working with homeless and/or foster youth.  * Knowledgeable about the McKinney Vento Homeless Student Assistance Act.  * Strong organizational skills. * Detail oriented. * Ability to balance and complete multiple projects accurately and on time. * Strong interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral). * Self-directed, but comfortable working as part of a team.  * Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and Google Suite. * Ability to attend virtual and in-person training, as needed.  * Ability to travel to events, as needed.
