POSITION: VOCATIONAL EDUCATION TEACHER

APPROVED BY THE BOARD OF EDUCATION

  • Maintain respect at all times for confidential information, e.g., home and discipline situations, medical background and family history
  • Make provisions for being available to students and parents for educationally related purposes before and after the instructional day
  • Attend professional growth seminars, workshops, etc., to keep current on relevant issues
  • Participate in advisory committee
  • Coordinate with night school for use of facilities
  • Assist in student recruitment activities
  • Attend vocational youth organization functions
  • Teach appropriate course of study pertaining to taxonomy

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Appropriate State of Ohio certification/license
  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) or equivalent from a four-year college or university
  • In some fields of concentration, advanced degree (M.A.) may be required
  • Certification in field of concentration, including required continuing education requirements
  • Journeyman or equivalent status in trade of concentration
  • Classroom management skills
  • Basic first-aid
  • Ability to work effectively with others
  • Ability to operate equipment associated with field of concentration
  • Van driver’s license
  • Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Teach and evaluate the students using sound instructional practices
  • Ensure safety of students
  • Effectively manage the classroom and individual student behavior to maintain a good learning environment, disciplining students when necessary
  • Prepare clear and timely lesson plans
  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required
  • Provide guidance to students which will promote their welfare and their proper educational development
  • Attend parent/teacher conferences
  • Distribute homework assignments
  • Provide complete lesson plans for substitute
  • Coordinate instructional activities with academic instructors to provide students with program-related learning experiences
  • Facilitate career exploration activities
  • Develop and maintain supportive working relationships with cooperative education employers
  • Coordinate and monitor student performance in cooperative work experience positions
  • Provide realistic learning experiences in the areas of adult living and employability
  • Promote and facilitate student transition into post-secondary education
  • Foster and maintain cooperative relationships with post-secondary institutions
  • Refer students suspected of learning disabilities for diagnosis on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of district specialists as required
  • Attend meetings and in-services as required
  • Interact in a positive manner with staff, students and parents
  • Teach new concepts and facilitate different activities enabling students to learn in different ways
  • Assist in the hiring process of same subject teachers when requested and agreed upon
  • Make contacts with the public with tact and diplomacy
  • Ensure students are learning all subject material by testing, quizzing, or evaluating student projects on a regular
  • Act as teacher, facilitator and information source in subject area specialty
  • Demonstrate knowledge of subject matter and present clear, complete, and accurate explanations utilizing a variety

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal
  • Perform building duties as outlined in the teacher procedural manual
  • Order and warehouse multiple supplies
  • Complete work orders
  • Inventory and maintain tools and equipment
  • Act as a mentor for first year teachers as agreed upon
  • Attend educational field trips
  • Participate on building “teams” when requested and agreed upon
  • Assist in the selection of textbooks, equipment, and other instructional materials
  • Act as department chairperson when requested and agreed upon
  • Serve as a role model for students
  • Organize various subject specific programs within assigned building, e.g., Right to Read Week
  • Work closely with administrators as part of development teams to discuss and implement new practices such as “team” teaching, semester projects, etc.
  • Serve on committees and co-curricular activities as agreed upon
  • Respond to routine questions and requests in an appropriate manner
  • Discipline students when necessary
  • Supervise student teachers
  • Act as job coach
  • Assist Placement Department with field-related jobs
  • Participate in VSO competitions as required
  • Participate in work-based learning programs
