Responsibilities

YOUR ROLE

The Centre Manager is responsible for the operational functioning of the youth justice centre on a day-to-day basis to ensure the needs of children and young people sentenced, or on remand, are met within a safe and secure therapeutic setting in accordance with relevant legislation.
Reporting directly to the Director and in consultation with internal partners, the centre manager will develop, implement and monitor consistent practices and routines that deliver best practice standards and address the underlying causes of offending behaviour by increasing young offender completion rates in key treatment and intervention programs.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Lead, mentor, provide direction, oversight and line management to a large multi-disciplinary workforce operating in a custodial setting.
  • Manage the security and safety of custodial centres by maintaining effective systems of static and dynamic security: including frequent inspection and maintenance of all equipment and infrastructure, coordinating emergency response or crisis management events in consultation with local emergency service agencies, training for staff, emergency response exercises and developing evacuation contingencies.
  • Provide evidence based and high-quality programs and services to children and young people with complex needs and behaviours in custodial settings.
  • Provide programs to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, culturally and linguistically diverse children, and young people that are culturally appropriate and recognise and celebrate their cultures to improve rehabilitation and successful community reintegration.
  • Continually research current best practice and innovative strategies relating to the management of children and young people in detention, including evidence-based practice and behaviour management strategies designed to reduce criminogenic risk and offending behaviour and promote community reintegration.
  • Undertake change management, evaluating ongoing centre performance, identify crucial success factors and initiate continuous improvement strategies and reform activities, including establishing, managing and monitoring business practices, systems and procedures to achieve required outcomes and provide an efficient and effective operation that enables the centre to achieve business objectives. Build and foster positive working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to improve the engagement of children and young people and their chances of a successful return to the community.
  • Plan, direct and control the financial activities of the youth justice centre in accordance with financial management and accounting policies and correct financial delegation.
  • Contribute to operational planning, compliance, reform, governance support and compliance and management activities to ensure senior executives have reliable, relevant and concise information.
