JOB DESCRIPTION:

Plan and perform all work necessary to make and develop any type of die (i.e. blanking dies, forming dies, draw dies or progressive dies) combining one or more of the above mentioned types of operation and other like items of the highest degree of complexity for the production of quality products. Determine from sample parts or part drawings which type of die or tool, along with its dimensions, cutting clearances and other like features as needed. This position reports to Maintenance Supervision and works in accordance with the the 430A Standards and with the responsibilities outlined below.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Must hold a valid 430A Ontario Certificate of Qualification issued by the Ministry of Colleges and Universities OR served a bona fide apprenticeship of 8,000 hours or 9,000 hours as applicable, or has eight years practical experience in the skilled trades’ classification in which he/she claims journey person designation and can prove the same. (The Unifor journey person’s card will be accepted as proof or presently holds a journey person classification as a tool and die maker)
  • Able to meet all physical demands of the job including, but not limited to, lifting heavy loads, standing for long periods of time, shift rotation, working in hot and cold environments.
  • Valid Lift Truck / Crane certification
  • Must have tools common to the trade

Responsibilities

Designs, creates, repairs and tests prototypes and production tools such as dies, cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges and specialty tools using various metals, alloys and plastics. Specifically, a Tool and Die Maker:

  • Develops, repairs and modifies tools, dies, jigs, fixtures, and gauges as required.
  • Reads related work instruction(s) and signs off same for compliance with IATF 16949.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, schematics, drawings and specifications of tools, dies, prototypes or models.
  • Files, grinds, shims, and adjusts different parts to properly fit them together.
  • Cuts, shapes, and trims blanks or blocks to specified lengths or shapes, using power saws, power shears, rules, and hand tools.
  • Positions, secures and measures metal stock or castings to lay out for machining.
  • Works with internal departments for design input, fabrication, and modifications to tools and dies.
  • Works with sample parts, tool design drawings, sketches, accepted best practices, oral instructions or standard tool manuals to required tolerance and performance.
  • Safely and skillfully sets up, operates, and maintains all machine shop equipment.
  • Prepares sketches for machining of tool details. May suggest design changes and/or modifications of tools to facilitate construction or practicability of usage.
  • Fits and assembles parts to make, repair, or modify dies, jigs, gauges, and tools, using machine tools and hand tools.
  • Lifts, positions and secures machined parts on surface plates or worktables, using hoists, vices, v-blocks, or angle plates.
  • Ensures timely completion of repairs, new dies, tolling, fixtures, and jigs etc., as required.
  • Estimates hours required to build a complete set of tools, and break down individual hours for each detail by machine, if required.
  • Inspects and tests completed tools, dies, jigs or fixtures for proper operation.
  • Performs tool and die tryout incidental to the work as required.
  • Inspects, diagnoses and repairs all dyes as required.
  • Performs predictive and preventative maintenance on tools and dies.
  • Modifies dies and tooling to conform to engineering changes.
  • Inspects finished dies for smoothness, contour conformity, and defects.
  • Conducts test runs with completed tools or dies to ensure that parts meet specifications; make adjustments as necessary.
  • Utilizes troubleshooting skills techniques.
  • Able to use oxy acytelene, perform plasma cutting, tig, mig and/or arc weld and rig heavy loads with cranes.
  • Performs any other related duties that may be specifically or generally assigned.
