The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the oldest student association in Canada and has been a central student organization at Queen's since its founding in 1858. Today, the AMS acts as a service, advocacy, and governing body on behalf of all students enrolled in AMS-affiliated programs at Queen's University. The AMS is a not-for-profit entity created by the Society to ensure its continuing financial viability by overseeing the management of its services and associated financial affairs. It is bound by the By-laws and corporate philosophy of our Mission and Operating statements as set out in the AMS Constitution. In addition to providing wage-based service staff positions for students wanting employment, the AMS seeks to support the Society's broader objectives through the provisioning of a high quality, relevant range of student funded services, that provide a wide range of employment opportunities and meaningful out-of-classroom learning and skill acquisition experiences for students. Job Summary The Commission of Environmental Sustainability has been reinstated to fill gaps in sustainability internally and externally at the AMS. Among working on advocacy and sustainable initiatives on campus, they work with services to implement best practices in sustainability. With these goals in mind, the CES is seeking an Environmental Sustainability Internal Manager to assist the Commissioner in AMS environmental policy revisions, consultations with AMS services to better their sustainability practices, and other related special projects. This position will have a focus on student advocacy, policy, and environmental affairs. Competencies Cultural Sensitivity Accountability Attention to Detail Communication Problem Solving Conflict Management Time Management Public Relations Job Duties Work on a variety of special projects such as advocacy relating to environmental sustainability, education, and a greener campus. Reach out to clubs and groups on campus to build community and to see how they would like to be advocated for Create policy/advocacy points to highlight to the university on how we can be better address environmental gaps Present a quarterly brief on issues impacting environmentalism on campus and how the AMS can bring forward solutions Oversee the creation of, and running of a committee which works on issues of environmental sustainability Create a timeline of projects for the year Maintain at least three regular office hours per week Ensure that volunteers and/or employees adhere to all health and safety regulations Monitor volunteer and/or employee performance to mitigate disciplinary action in accordance with established procedures and notify Head Manager of any issues that arise Exhibit a working knowledge of volunteers portfolios while ensuring work is being performed according to established standards Ensure all student needs are addressed and handled professionally Assist with new volunteer training by positively reinforcing successful performance and giving respectful and encouraging coaching as needed Maintain a calm demeanor during periods of high stress Assist the Commissioner in the development of a goal plan, budget, mid-year review, and any relevant capital expenditure proposals Coordinate activities with the Senior Manager by scheduling work assignments, setting priorities, and delegating work accordingly Participate as an active member on hiring panels to keep the service adequately staffed Ensure that all employees comply with company policies, procedures, and ethical standards Attend and fully participate in all in person and virtual meetings Maintain consistent communication with all relevant stakeholders, responding to e-mails in a timely manner Complete a thorough transition process with the incoming manager that includes one on one meetings and a transition manual Complete other duties as assigned Job Requirements Ability to remain calm and poised in urgent situations Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills Demonstrated time management skills Ability to identify measures of performance and actions needed to improve or correct performance Ability to supervise and motivate a team to achieve and exceed their goals Ability to delegate, set expectations, and monitor progress of all direct reports Work Conditions Interaction with employees, management, and the public at large Working in an office environment Operation of desktop computer and peripherals The AMS is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate against any employee or applicant for employment because of age, race, religion, colour, disability, sex, sexual orientation, or national origin.
