Charge/Admission Nurse 3p-11p | St. Gregory Recovery Center | Bayard, Iowa About the Job: PURPOSE STATEMENT: The Charge Nurse (RN) oversees assigned unit/department for assigned shift and provides direct client care while supervising care treatment and services provided by other members of the nursing team to assure optimal client outcomes. Manages the Plan of Care for each client and actively participates as a member of the multi-disciplinary team of the unit. Ensures appropriate staffing of the unit for coverage needs related to acuity, absences, and leave time. Roles and Responsibilities: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Provides direct care for clients as well as monitors and coordinates other nurses and members of the staff on the daily medical or behavioral health care activities of the unit. Leads, guides and trains staff on the unit. Confers regularly with treatment team (e.g., nurses, therapists, program managers, physician) regarding client care. Monitors client acuity, census, staffing needs, and makes arrangements for coverage ensuring appropriate staffing ratios. Assures thorough, accurate documentation is completed for all clients on each shift and client assignment sheets are completed daily and tasks are carried out as assigned. Oversees and provides direct nursing evaluation, consultation and other related care to clients as required. Monitors unit safety and works with staff to maintain a safe environment. Coordinates services and maintains communication with other departments or staff as required. Oversees quality assurance activities and compliance to operational standards, participates in program development, and promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices. Supervises medication administration and makes staff aware of errors and works towards performance improvement. Checks stock of over the counter (OTC) medications to ensure that the orders are requested as needed. Coordinates, monitors and evaluates Infection Control activities in adherence to policies and procedures. Reports discrepancies and follows through with corrective actions. Addresses employee performance improvement issues at the time noticed, to provide supportive documentation and assists with any follow-up as necessary. Audits and organizes medication room to maintain compliance with regulatory requirements, best practices, and reduce the opportunity for medication errors or diversion. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILL REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from an approved/accredited school of nursing required. One or more years’ experience as an RN required. One or more years’ in behavioral health experience preferred. LICENSES/DESIGNATIONS/CERTIFICATIONS: Valid current RN license from the state or from a compact state, where applicable. Certified in Psychiatric Nursing preferred. CPR certification and de-escalation training required (training available upon hire and offered by facility). First aid may be required based on state or facility. SUPERVISORY REQUIREMENTS: One or more years’ supervisory or charge nurse experience preferred.
