POSITION OBJECTIVE

Manage the technical and organizational activities related to packaging department employees, including mechanics and plant cleaners.

Areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensuring efficiency and quality during packaging line changeovers.
  • Performing effective corrective actions for technical issues during line operations.
  • Promptly addressing technical safety aspects and related concerns.
  • Proactively seeking improvement opportunities (continuous improvement program) in organizational and technical work methods.
  • Supporting maintenance and engineering teams with the purchase of new equipment and the upgrade of existing equipment.
  • Managing the technical supervisor, line mechanics, and plant cleaning teams.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Required Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience

Required Experience:

  • Production experience in a pharmaceutical or equivalent cGMP-regulated environment
  • Minimum 10 years in a technical environment
  • Minimum 5 years in a supervisory role or equivalent experience

Preferred Additional Experience:

  • Exposure to customer service-oriented environments is an asset
  • ERP environment experience (SAP preferred)

Functional Skills:

  • Computer proficiency
  • Lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, and understanding of their applications
  • Knowledge of continuous improvement processes
  • Strong technical knowledge of packaging equipment

Responsibilities

Personnel Management:

  • Support and motivate the packaging technical team to achieve departmental goals by implementing the appropriate action plan.
  • Coach employees under your responsibility, including the technical packaging supervisor, in their roles and responsibilities.
  • Support the management of mechanics and plant cleaning teams.
  • Maintain professional and effective communication with various support departments (quality, engineering, product development, etc.) to achieve team objectives.
  • Initiate performance evaluations and develop action plans to ensure ongoing training and team development.
  • Manage absenteeism and overtime.
  • Ensure timely training and instruction of employees.

Production Operations:

  • Implement line performance improvement measures (via operational work methods and equipment improvements) within the established Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) program to reduce operating costs, scrap rates, and improve production yield.
  • Support maintenance and engineering teams in the purchase of new equipment and assist with updating existing equipment.
  • Maintain and update a list of all equipment or work method changes due to improvements.
  • Identify and evaluate opportunities to add value to the process while ensuring technical execution meets planning requirements for maximum line efficiency and optimization.
  • Assess new methods to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of product visual inspection activities.
  • Determine continuous improvement (CI) objectives through equipment modifications, technical team work organization, and minimal financial investment.
  • Evaluate the impact of introducing new or improved practices.
  • Recommend permanent corrective actions to address:
  • Quality deviations and to meet set targets
  • Safety issues or potential risks as a preventive measure
  • Line performance to ensure agreed-upon packaging targets are met
  • Prepare technical production reports, such as changeover durations, line performance, and the impact of continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Communicate, plan, and organize weekly meetings with employees to gather ideas and suggestions for line efficiency improvements, fostering a continuous improvement mindset in packaging operations.
  • Ensure equipment is operational and initiate/follow up on work orders.
  • Ensure equipment availability for technical modifications, preventive maintenance, and calibration to avoid line interruptions.
  • Participate in the implementation and management of KPIs related to deviations, rejects per operation, machine downtime, etc.
  • Manage priorities to meet organizational and team-specific objectives.
  • Occasionally work on continuous improvement initiatives with other departments and their supervisors/managers.
  • Order consumables for packaging production.
  • Perform other tasks assigned by management.

Quality Operations:

  • Ensure that employees and equipment in the packaging area follow procedures and comply with cGMP standards.
  • Responsible for approving incident reports.
  • Review departmental SOPs.

Health & Safety:

  • Attend health and safety committee meetings.
  • Responsible for enforcing and ensuring compliance with health and safety rules.
  • Ensure all employees adopt safe work practices and behaviors.
