JOB SUMMARY

We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Care Home Chef to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in preparing fresh, nutritious, and varied meals, with an understanding of the dietary needs of older people and those living with dementia or nursing needs. This role requires creativity, attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of food safety and hygiene. The Chef will play a vital role in supporting residents’ health and wellbeing by delivering enjoyable mealtimes and fostering a positive, well-run kitchen environment.

EXPERIENCE & SKILLS

  • Previous experience as a Chef, Cook, or similar role in a care home, school, or hospitality setting.
  • Strong knowledge of food preparation, cooking, and kitchen management.
  • Understanding of dietary requirements, including IDDSI framework for modified diets, is desirable.
  • Proven leadership skills with experience supervising or mentoring kitchen staff.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of food hygiene and safety regulations (Food Hygiene Level 2/3 essential).
  • A catering or culinary qualification is desirable but not essential.
  • Baking skills would be a strong advantage.

Responsibilities
  • Plan, prepare, and cook balanced and appealing meals that meet residents’ dietary needs, including soft diets, vegetarian options, and cultural preferences.
  • Oversee daily kitchen operations, ensuring meals are served on time and to a consistently high standard.
  • Supervise and support kitchen assistants, promoting good teamwork and professional development.
  • Manage stock levels, order supplies, and minimise waste in line with the home’s budget.
  • Maintain compliance with food safety regulations (including HACCP) and ensure the kitchen is clean, safe, and audit-ready at all times.
  • Work with management and care staff to adapt menus seasonally and in response to residents’ feedback.
  • Support themed events, celebrations, and activities through food and catering input.
  • Ideally, bring skills in baking cakes, breads, and pastries to enhance residents’ enjoyment and special occasions.
  • Contribute to a warm, caring, and homely atmosphere within the care home.
