QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & EXPERIENCES:

  • Tertiary qualifications in a Bachelor of Science or similar
  • Minimum 2 years’ relevant experience
  • A sound understanding of laboratory quality systems and familiarity with Laboratory Information Management System (Labware) is highly desirable
  • Sound knowledge of Microsoft suite of products particularly Excel, Word, Outlook
Responsibilities

OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE

Working in a team in the on-site Laboratory, the Chemist is responsible for performing chemical and instrumental analysis, with a quick and accurate turnaround of process control samples to meet customer requirements. Accuracy and troubleshooting is imperative in this role, therefore adhering to site procedures and the Laboratory Quality Manual is a must. This role reports to the Chemist Team Leader and in addition to the above, performs project task work, including process troubleshooting and method development, as required. The Chemist ensures adequate operating supplies in the laboratory, in the absence of the Chemist Team Leader, as well as performing calibration and recalibration of laboratory equipment.
These are shift positions, working 12 hour days - 4 days on and 4 days off. The successful candidates will be residentially based or willing to relocate to Port Pirie or nearby surrounding region. Nyrstar provides a generous relocation and salary package.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ROLE INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Perform routine analysis of process control samples, accurately and timely to meet customer requirements
  • Perform method development and validation of new and existing in-house analytical techniques
  • Report defective or inaccurate equipment and assist in the troubleshooting process to resolve the issue
  • Escalate irregular results to the Chemist Team Leader
  • Operate laboratory equipment in accordance with correct operating procedures as detailed in the Laboratory Quality Manual
  • Maintain high standards of performance and processes in accordance with relevant regulations, codes of practice and Port Pirie Smelter Standards & Guidelines
